PILLOWS! I have pillow love!!!

The symptoms of pillow love are easy to spot! I think I have an advanced case!

I have a "pillow closet".... pillows need to be removed from every chair or sofa if you want to sit down in my house... I can hear the pillows calling to me as soon as I step foot into a HomeGoods or Pottery Barn...every piece of material, dish towel or napkin is eyed up and considered the makings of a new pillow...I have "show" pillows and "usable" pillows... and fluffing all the pillows around StoneGable an aerobic exercise!!

Yes... I have pillow love... big time!

FRONT DOOR WREATH~ SUMMER 2013

This summer's theme for my front porch is SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY. Even though I am not southern by birth... I like to think that I have a southern soul.

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY is a nod to my new daughter-in-law and her wonderful family! And hospitality starts at the front door.

So grab yourself some sweet tea and come up on the porch...

Nothing says "welcome to my home" like a big lush wreath on the front door.

The large urns flanking the front door were filled with blue hydrangeas this year. They remind me of the south for some reason! Maybe because Southern Living Magazine is filled with them this year!

Because I didn't want the wreath to compete with the beauty of the hydrangeas as they fill in and bloom, I kept it lush with lots of greens and just a touch of white blooms to add a little interest.

Of course, what is more southern than a monogram?

Our monogram fills the center of the wreath.

Can you see the etched letter "P" on the right sidelight? The second widow from the top... I saw this done in Savannah and loved it so much that I had one placed in my window too!

As I say... My front door is always open to friends... old and new!

UPSCALE SHELLS

Summer is the time for shells, beach cottages and all things surf and sand! I pour over magazines who's beach homes are graced with views of bright blue water and white sandy beaches.

Homes filled with bleached linens, outdoor showers and lots of beachy elements! Things that are swoon worthy... but do not work with my Lancaster County home!

Determined not to miss out on the summery feel of beach life, I am upscaling shells to make them feel at home in my family room decor...

To make this work in my traditional farmhouse inspired home, I chose just a couple of beach elements... shells and rope knots... and contained them to one area of my family room... the coffee table.

I also kept a very tight color palette which helps tie the vignette together. These colors would be found at the beach... sand beige... blue...white... and soft textural browns.

Mixing just a wee bit of coastal detail with decor elements that are authentic to my family room gives them an upscale and not contrived or out of place look. There is no way I can pull off a full blown beach look in the middle of bucolic farmland!

Shells, starfish and sand dollars fill a blue willow bowl that is set on a complimentary saucer. The shapes, texture and color of the shells looks so pretty in this very traditional bowl and give the shells a more upscale feel.

This big flat-bottomed basket has great texture and works well to hold the books that work as a riser for the bowl full of shells and little blue pitcher.

If you look carefully in the picture above... the top book is one I published of our vacation in Bar Harbor last summer. I like MY PUBLISHER to make books. It is a bit addictive!

Big rope knots in blue and white continue the beachy theme.

A big glass bowl on a wrought iron stand holds assorted white shells. A white candle is nestled in the middle to bring a soft glow to the arrangement.
