When my son Christoper was about four years old he asked a very funny question... "Mommy... is Pop-Pop older than God?"
I had a little giggle and answered, "No son, God is older than anything... even Pop-Pop!
How do you explain eternity to a four year old. Christopher's length of days were not even a blip on the timeline of history! Almost everything was older than him!
Under all that sweet and cute innocence was a very profound question... one that has been asked throughout the ages... just how long has God existed?
We know from many verses in the Scriptures that it is very clear that God is eternal... easy to say... vastly complex to understand!
Eternal... the Ancients had an easier and more concrete way to describe God's eternal nature...
They used words like...
FOREVER AND EVER...
FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION...
and
BEFORE THE MOUNTAINS WERE BORN...
The Ancients used words for eternal that my four year old could more easily understand.
HE has always been.... HE is now.... and HE will always be... what a big big thought. HE was before HE created time and HE will be there at he end of time...
Not only did God created time... HE is outside and other than time...HE is the master of time!
What a comforting thought. Our great God who loves us more than we can comprehend holds time... all time... OUR TIME... in HIS nail pierced hands!
"I AM THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA", SAYS THE LORD, "WHO WAS, AND IS, AND IS TO COME"! Rev 1:8
Your post made me remember an incident from when my children were young, two grade school age and three toddlers/infant. We had a big chalk board in the upstairs hall of our house. After church on Sunday I would write one of the verses featured in the service that morning. One week I had written "Be still, and know that I am God". Only to later hear my oldest saying to his sister "Oh, no, she is NOT!" which cracked me up.
