One question that I get asked quite often is, "Where do you keep all your dishes?". I must admit that finding a place for all my beloved dishes and accent pieces is a real challenge. Like trying to park the Titanic in a stream!
I have a kitchen with large pantries. Lots of space in there. And a buffet and a small built-in in my dining room. My last resort for dish storage is a toy closet (more like a small room) turned dish closet in my finished basement. Mostly seasonal things, such as Christmas and Easter go there. And sometimes, if truth be told, when I aquire new dishes and don't quite know where I am going to put them they sit out in my garage! At least for awhile.
I am in the process of making one of my two closets on either side of my front door into a dish closet. It is right off the dining room- the perfect spot! It will hold a good amount of my collection. At least it is on Bobby's list to do.

But my favorite place to store my dishes is right out in plain sight! Looking around my house I have dishes everywhere. Every room has a dish display on a wall. Every cupboard, cabinet and may surfaces have dishes displayed on them. I use dishes in nonconventional ways!
I thought it would be fun to share with you some decorating ideas using dishes. Today I am concentrating on displaying dishes in a cupboard or cabinet. Look for upcoming posts this summer for other ways to display and use your dishes.
With each season, holiday or just on a whim this slender built-in cupboard in my dinning room gets a facelift. I love choosing plates and accent pieces to display in it and watching it all come together.
The newly decorated cupboard draws on the recent popularity of all white decor. I have a love/hate relationship with this snowy and showy turn in interior fashion. When it is done right it is hauntingly beautiful with an etherial quality. But done wrong it can look like someone went crazy with a paint sprayer and contractor grade white paint! All white designs need texture, life and a little color.
I gathered up white dishes and accent pieces that I thought would fit in the built-in cupboard. Because the shelves are curved, I was limited in surface space.
Plates line the back of each shelf, standing upright.
Dishes are stacked on top of one another for height and interest. I love the look of interesting plate edges.
Adding plates on rich colored wooden stands gives depth and life. A little touch of wood works wonders in a predominately white theme.
Green apples are both organic and colorful, and add just the right amount of color pop without being distracting. They sit in my favorite scallopped pedestal bowl.
Other elements that are stacked are little white egg cups
And delicate porcelain leaf teacups.
A white ribbed teapot rests on a stack of pretty plates.
A small pitcher echoing the ribs on the teapot is overflowing with White Flowering Almond blossoms. Again, something organic to breath life into the monochromatic color scheme.
This is just one small area of my house that stores my dish collection. And just for now it is home to all the whites!
Hi Yvonne! This looks lovely...
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about all white, but adding texture, as you mentioned seems to be perfect for this corner cabinet... it's so beautiful, simple and serene~
I hope you're having a great week!
~ blessings always ~
Maria
Very pretty! I like the way you incorporated the different textures, the green apples, and the flowers.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to additional posts like this!

Yvonne,
ReplyDeleteYour collection is stunning! I love all the edges on your white plates...it makes them so distinctive even though they are all white. Your storage cabinet is beautiful! I get asked the same about where I keep my dishes..thank goodness for a large pantry..but I don't have a basement sooo I'm going to add some cabinets in my laundry room...shhhh don't tell my hubbie! LOL. Thanks for your sweet visit!
Miss Bloomers
Wow Yvonne, this is so gorgeous! I love the way you have displayed your whites together like that. You have given me some great ideas-thank you!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for a beautiful week,
Natasha.
Beauty in simplicity is my favorite. If I didnt have to get to work , I'd just sit and look at your photos all day... I can only dream of ever making such a beautiful display but until then I have your's to admire.
ReplyDeleteSonny
Just beautiful!! The flowers and apples add a nice touch. I love how you arranged the pieces. WOW!!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful post, Yvonne. I collect white dishes and love to decorate with them.
ReplyDeleteYvonne...your display of *white^ takes my breath away! I have that same love-hate relationship with all-white decor and have seen it done badly.....yours is gorgoeus! I love the splashes of color and all the texture. I would have loved to seen your big white rooster (I am on the look out for one of my own) too but those narrow, curved shelves may have made him feel too confined :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Gail
HI Yvonne, Your corner cabinet is gorgeous filled with all the white. I've got two corner cabinets filled with my red transferware and display mine similarly. You have to work at getting that many pieces into a small spot and still have it look aeshetically pleasing. I love your touch of green in the apples and softness of the flowers. You've got such a great eye for detail and a real talent for grouping things together to make them lovely. I'd just love to peruse your whole house! I'm sure it's gorgeous through and through! After seeing your white collection and a couple of others around blogosphere I'm getting the urge to start a little collection of ironstone myself....I'm trying to resist though. Loved this post! Have a great week, Nancy
ReplyDeleteI love it! :) Very beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteI love the curve of your built-in Yvonne. I'll have to keep that in mind for future cabinet design. The all white theme is wonderful and so refreshing for spring. Keep those pictures coming, love seeing all aspects of your beautiful home.
ReplyDeleteSTUNNING!!! Yvonne, this is so pretty and what a great tutorial on how to display dishes in a cabinet. All of your dishes are beautiful and you have arranged them with so they are so interesting and pretty to see. Love the flowers and the apples. This really is just lovely. Thanks so much for joining the party. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed reading this post in particular- your corner cab is very well set up in a tranquil manner that is very pleasing- I am not often a fam on so much white- but you make it work very well with the textures and a little interjection of color. Made me laugh to read you added shelves to your dh's list of things to do- I saved a pic of your corner cab to show mine-he keeps seeing a much larger one in our dining room. Liked seeing your neutral paint color in the d room as well- we went with autumnal colors of golden beige and cinnabar-not thinking it would limit what I display in there-
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely vignette! Well done.
ReplyDeleteThis has to be one of the most beautiful displays of dishes I've ever seen! The apples and flowers add just the right pop of color and I love all the textured edges of the dishes. Just beautiful and I can't wait to see more this summer.
ReplyDeleteYvonne, this is GORGEOUS!! I love the edges on your plate!! What a BEAUTIFUL display you have created!! XXOO
ReplyDeleteGreat tips...love your cupboard of white dishes and interesting way you have placed them...it looks natural and non staged.
ReplyDeleteYvonne, that's really pretty. I love all your white dishes. Looks marvelleous.
ReplyDeleteGreetings, Johanna
It looks beautiful. My "two houses ago" home had several built in cabinets. I loved them for displaying beautiful things. I would even love them more now!
ReplyDeleteI love the little pops of green...very nicely written and the photos are lovely.
Striking and beautiful- no surprise at all. I tried to visit earlier, but blogger wouldn't let me :( Yvonne, we have been trying to find spaces for more storage and I would kill for cabinets such as those. Unfortunately, our dining room has no corners! Just gorgeous

Girl you make white look so beautiful...love your cabinet your displays are just wonderful thanks for sharing this fun and beautiful post...hugs and smiles Gl♥ria
ReplyDeleteWhat a peaceful & serene look you have created, Yvonne! I just ♥ that punch of lime green color in there, too. Very, very well done!
ReplyDeleteWe have many of the same dishes, too! LOL I recognize several. :-)
The little spoon cradle/rest/dispenser (what DO you call those, anyway?) with the fleur de lis on it is just precious. I must put one of those caddies on my hunting list for our next buffet.
Thank you so much for sharing how you stash your stuff! Mine are under every bed, in every closet, downstairs in the sewing room & some are even on top of the shelves in the laundry room. Its a sickness, I know! LOL
You make a lot of decorating sense. The green leaves of the flowers and the apples just pop. I have a cupboard in my living room that could use your touch!
ReplyDeleteStunning!!
ReplyDeleteThe apples added an unexpected pop of color that I love!!!
THANK YOU so much for sharing this and showing us how to do a GORGEOUS display like this! LOVE the almond blossoms, they add just the right accent! The edges of your plates are to die for. I get asked the same thing, and I am truly out of space BUT have such a hard tme not buying MORE dishes:):) This is a beautiful cabinet and display. XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteI'm absolutely DROOLING over your white dishes collection! And what a beautiful way to show them off! I love your corner cabinet!
ReplyDeleteYvonne....And to think some people think white dishes are boring! NOT ME...my original "wedding" every day dishes were Antique Grape by Poppytrail/Metlox which I still love! Had to buy a white set...Manoir...at the Villeroy & Boch factory in Mettlach, Germany. Love to use them with other patterns that have the same scalloped edge! Your display is so inspirational.....
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Gwen
There are those plates that I adore! I have yet to find them at my Home Goods though! Ugh! I want them so bad cause if I do get them then my table will automatically be as beautiful as yours are! Atleast that is what I tell the hubby! Love the display. Course I would expect nothing but a perfect display from you! What about the rest of the room though? I really think that you should go nuts and do a home tour!
ReplyDeleteYvonne, you have an open invitation to come to my house and arrange my dishes and cook one of your fabulous dinners for me any time you want to. Your images are beautiful and I love your comment about white. You said it perfectly.
ReplyDeleteTonight I'm making your yummy chicken dish that you posted this week.
How gorgeous. I absolutely love this post. The apple green against white is truly stunning. I hope you are having a wonderful day. Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteWow! This display of your white dishes is stunning! A real work of art! It makes me want to rearrange all of MY dishes...would you come and help;)?
ReplyDeleteI am in awe...
Enjoy!
Cathy
Yvonne, all your white dishes look wonderful. I know there is a lot of all white rooms going on in the design world and in blog land. I still love color, but like white, too. I have just changed my dining room hutch to displays of white. I will probably keep this look for a while. I love your corner cabinet and all those lovely dishes with the pop of green in the apples and the texture of the wood stand.
ReplyDeleteJust Lovely! You can never go wrong with white.
ReplyDeleteAs always, I'm inspired by your eye for the beautiful!

What a beautiful, beautiful set of dishes! I love them and the way you displayed them is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOOOOOOOOOOh! So pretty! This is what I check out WW for! Dish people REALLY love dishes. You're right about texture. And I LOVE the two-tone colors of the wall behind. Luscious yummy!! Wonderfully displayed. Jacqueline
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful. There is something about green apples with white dishes they look fabulous together.
ReplyDeleteYvonne, Beautiful display. Love the textures and color you worked with to add to the white. Sounds like we do similar things to store (and display) our dishes. BTW made and enjoyed your cinco de ... meal and tonight had leftovers of the black bean/corn dish. I made it into a small pie, using a soft whole wheat taco as the crust, and somewhat followed this recipe (link below): (just in case you ever have left overs). I also added some left over potatoes and cauliflower, etc. It was a hit. Have a great week.

ReplyDeleteYou have a gorgeous collection of white dishes...and you've displayed them beautifully! It looks like a picture from a decorating magazine! I love the added elements of the green apples and the flowering almond; white with touches of green looks so fresh to me!
ReplyDeleteOh, what a gorgeous post! You really have an excellent eye for display!
ReplyDelete"like parking the Titanic in a stream"

ReplyDeleteDebra
Just breathtaking!!!
ReplyDeletem ^..^
Picture perfect - straight out of a magazine! So pretty!
ReplyDeleteAhhh...Yvonne. I so understand your problem. I used to change the corner cabinet in my dining room out regularly, but then if you want to actually use those plates it messes up that cabinet! I now have a display in my corner cabinet that coordinates with my wall paper.
ReplyDelete"Where do you keep them?" is going to be my first meme to celebrate the one year anniversary of my blog - June 2nd. I'm working on a button. Stay posted.

ReplyDeleteYvonne, the white collection is stunning! I'm going to follow your lead and pull out some of my dishes for displays around the house. I collected them because I love them--why not see more of them? And, so I'm off to display! Have a wonderful time at your retreat!

Bonnie

ReplyDeleteSpectacular....love this. Following you.
ReplyDeleteYvonne,
ReplyDeleteI love this display and I really love your scalloped pedestal bowl. Where did you get this or who is made by? Thanks for your help!
Who is the manufacturer of those lovely white leaf and berry plates you have standing up in the back??? They are amazing. I read your other post where you said you found them at HomeGoods, but we don't have that store in Seattle. I was hoping to scour the web to find some...
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your amazing tablescapes. My 5 year old daughter (Amelie) and I play tablescaping together. She's quickly becoming a pro!
Yvonne, you have such beautiful taste! Your home is so lovely.
