Creating vignettes can often be daunting. Few people have the ability to create a beautifully put together tabletop display without a lot of effort. I fit into the first category. I have a fuzzy idea of what I would like a finished table vignette to be, but executing it is another story.
Today I created an EASY little vignette and 5 tips that will help the "vignette impaired" like me to create a simple arrangement to be proud of...
1. GROUP OBJECTS IN ODD NUMBERS
This is decorating 101! Even though I have 4 objects on the top of my Curlacue Chest, there is a distinct grouping of 3. I don't count the lamp because it sits alone.
Things grouped in odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye.
I tend to like bigger items and less of them. I'm not much of a chochkie girl! But if you like more items, display an odd number!
2. USE A LOW SIDED BASKET TO CORRAL GROUPINGS
This is one of my favorite decorating tricks! Place your grouping in a basket to give it a boundary and to define it. It also give the grouping more "importance".
Using a basket also brings great texture to a vignette!
I like very chunky baskets!
3. GROUP DIFFERENT SIZED OBJECTS
Varying heights lets your eye travel from one object to the next. Same sized objects are not interesting to the eye.
As you can see by standing the ring of my lantern up tall, it adds just enough height to be the tallest piece in my vignette.
4. USE DIFFERENT TEXTURES
Texture adds interest to a vignette. I used a smooth lantern and a chippy rough olive jar and a fluffy faux plant.
Different textures make an attractive vignette!
5. COLORS IN A VIGNETTE SHOULD WORK WITH A ROOM
Color can make or break a vignette when viewing it in context of a room. Create a vignette using colors inspired by what you already have in your room.
My inspiration... the Kessler painting behind it.
By following these 5 easy steps you can create a simple and beautiful vignette!
Remember to
I count your vignette as three....the lamp, the picture on the wall, and the tray of items.

I love this post. Thanks so much for sharing!
Where did you find that basket . . . it's beautiful? I need one :0)
Hope you're having a great week,
Suzanne
Thanks, Suzanne! We have a Pottery Barn outlet about 5 miles from our farmhouse. I got it and the lantern and the olive jar from there. Not bought at one time. but collected!~
DeleteIt would be so awesome if you could do a post with pictures on the PB outlet! You get the best stuff there and it would be interesting to see what they have. I am trying to get my husband to take me. It is quite a drive since I live in Canada but I really want to go!
Deletethanks for asking about that basket....I love it and want one too!
DeleteI love the look! And the plates which you've added above the picture draw the eye up to your magnificent ceiling which I have always loved. Thanks for the idea...I think I'll change some of my vignettes. A snowy day is always a good day to stay indoors!

Beautiful. Great post as so many people have a difficult time pulling it all together. Everything looks great in your living room.
ReplyDeleteThanks for these great tips! I am also 'vignette impaired!' Glad to know I'm not the only one!
ReplyDeleteLove and blessings!
Your decorating is always spot on. You are NOT in the first category. You always have a good eye for just what your room needs.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful Yvonne!...Love how you always make certain to mix different colors, textures, and size...and I adore the painting and that gorgeous chest!!!..Off to "corral" a new vignette...thanks Yvonne...I always gain great inspiration from you!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful as always. Would love for you to show other vignettes such as on a sofa table, large server, etc where there is a larger spread out space.
ReplyDeleteI have been doing (and changing vignettes all around the house this week and your tips are SPOT ON! LOVE your vignette and all the pieces in it! The painting is beautiful as well. Call me later. XOXO
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great tips..I'm "vignette impaired", too. Or maybe "objects impaired". I find I don't have enough variety of things to use, and I keep buying the same kinds of things instead of taking stock of what I have, and then looking for things that I need. I should make a list. :)
ReplyDeleteBabs, I do the same thing! Thanks for the advice!
DeleteA very fresh and airy vignette, reminds me of a dewy spring day! Great tips, Yvonne! Your style appears to be effortless, but I'm sure lots of ideas bounce around before you decide on the winning one. The painting is, for me, the showstopper!
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentine's Day!

WOW! Each item you selected is just perfect - I especially love the artwork. I find the black and beige so crisp yet your vignette leaves me with a very warm, cosy feeling. "Impaired" - no way!

ReplyDeleteIt is always more soothing to have an odd number of items in a vignette. I wonder what the psychology of that is?
ReplyDeleteLovely vignette!
