SHUTTERS ON THE MANTLE

Lots of little changes going on in my family room... especially on my mantle.

Here is a before picture...

This picture was taken in January.. can you see the changes?

And AFTER...

First to go was the paint color. Although I loved the Benjamin Moore Springfield Tan it made my family room and kitchen very dark.

After painting my living room and dining room with Benjamin Moore Sonnet, I was convinced that I need to lighten up the back rooms of StoneGable too!

So we painted the family room and kitchen in Sonnet also.  What a difference!!!

The mantle needed some depth of color and texture, so I started my hunt for a pair of chippy shutters.

My friend Fiffer, who is the best treasure hunter I know, had a pair in her barn.  They were old and authentic and the original black paint was chipped off just perfectly!  They were just what I was looking for. Thanks, Fiffer!!!!

Bobby cut them down to size and refitted the bottoms and we hung them on either side of the clock.

Then I brought back in the candlestick lamps I repainted and layered them in front of the shutters.

I'm still playing with the rest of the mantle vignette...

The trio of pitchers came from the Pottery Barn outlet a few years ago.

Bobby painted the brass portion of the fireplace with Rustoleum High Heat Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint.

I don't know what I am more thrilled with... the chippy shutters or no more shiny brass strips on the fireplace!!!

The next family room project... new hardwood floors... will hopefully be done this summer!

  2. Your mantel looks great, Yvonne! I love the shutters! I was going to go with black shutters for my mantel at one time, but, of course, I couldn't find any {too big or too small} at the time. Now I see them all the time! I have another room I'd like to use them in now, so I'm on the look out for something that will work for that idea.

  3. LOOKS GREAT!

We just recently had the Berber taken out and did hardwood floors in our living room too and am thrilled.

Love your new changes - my lr is very similar to that color you had - the tan - kinda of a creamy milk chocolate - we went DARKER because all of that side of the house is west facing and so so bright - we actually (well me, I hate too much sun and would live deep in the woods in a thatched roof cottage if I could,) so going darker to even and balance things out is what we did. : - )

I am so happy you are happy. Your treasure hunter is awesome. So is your carpenter!!

Where did you put that awesome clock, then?

    Hugs.

  6. Love the new look, Yvonne. The shutters look so good. I found a pair last weekend for a score and left them. May need to go back, but still not sure where to use them. I think I can find a spot though. I too want to lighten up the color in our great room and foyer and stairwell since they all connect. I need to check out your color.

  7. Totally love the whole look. My mom had that same copper kindling/ log holder when I was growing up. I like the way you move it in front of the fireplace during summer months.

  11. Good Afternoon Yvonne, You have made a huge change to your mantlepiece. I love how the shutters are balanced with the clock in the centre. The clock stands out more now that you have changed the wall colour.... it is really lovely.
May I ask, what have you done with all your gorgeous blue and white pieces?
    Best Wishes

  40. LOVE LOVE LOVE the shutters! Just found your blog from the home tour and adore your home. I'm just really impressed with the shutters as I asked our neighbor who was taking all his shutters off the outside of his home if I could have them. He was like "sure" my husband...was like "why"! lol I have used all but 6 boards but the first to be used were on the fireplace. I'm not even sure I did anything but kinda wipe of the spider webs. They just fit perfectly, frame the ginormous tv, and everyone adores them! So glad to see someone else has the same taste! I'm a big fan of your blog now! and PS, I e-mailed this post to my husband!! Look forward to seeing your new floors!
