CURLACUE CHEST

I know it must seem like FOREVER since I began the living room makeover... but working slowly really pays off...

Each piece is like a puzzle... flooring, paint, furniture, case goods, rug, paintings, accessories and a few more pieces that I have yet to make and find. Each piece needs to fit... as perfectly as I can fit it!

A big piece of the decor puzzle finally was put into place today!

The Curlacue Chest came to live at StoneGable.

I found the Curlacue Chest at a local interior design shop and instantly knew that it belonged at StoneGable... but there was a big problem... it was way over my budget! That seems to happen to me often!

A friend just happened to be visiting me and told me that she had seen it on Joss & Main!

She was right... and it was almost $700.00 off the original price.  Still a little over budget, but close enough! I just couldn't resist!

Unfortunately, I missed the sale by 4 minutes! But the nice folks at Joss & Main sent me to Wayfair and those nice people honored the Joss & Main price!

Thanks, Wayfair! YOU ROCK!

This chest's unusual finish and curvy design really won me over!!!!

A fabric or grass cloth was pasted to the chest and then painted and antiques. Each piece is slightly different and must be hand painted.

Mine has a slight mushroom hue and was distressed more heavily.

The curlacues are raised.  They remind me of ball fringe.

The painting over the chest is done by one of my favorite Washington DC artist..DAVID KESSLER.  The subject is a row of Paris homes. I adore primative art and his art has a whimsical and modern twist.

There is something about the color and the geometric lines that I find so interesting!

I brought a lamp in from the family room.  It is so heavy. The glass is lead crystal and the base is some sort of bronze.  I got it years ago from Restoration Hardware. It really was far to formal for the family room... now it has found a home too!

I picked Annabelle hydrangeas from around the porch to add something organic to the the vignette.

Now, what to put in the chest... it's not just a pretty face!

Next on the list... curtains! I keep putting them off!

There are curlacues on them too!!!

I know the clock doesn't work... I'll either paint it or put it upstairs. I'm leaning towards painting it!

  1. if you love the painting the why are you covering it up? i would do a low flower arrangement like (http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2011/07/diy-trough-thingy.html). the lamp is to big i would put a lamp by the chairs.

    1. no it is not a negative comment it is what i think when i look and the room and i like the room but to me if you love the painting then why are you covering it up because when i look at it all i see is the lamp and the flowers. i am sorry if you think that i am negative. i like you home.

    2. I enjoy reading a number of blogs, but I rarely comment for exactly this reason. It seems some bloggers are really interested in suggesting a topic or idea and stimulating or facilitating a true discussion --both positive/supportive and negative/critical. And other bloggers use them to really just sort of illustrate what they've been up to, various projects in their lives, etc. and are comfortable receiving only positive, flattering, validating comments -- no discussion unless it's to compliment the blogger.

I think the blogger has the 'right' to structure it any way they want. It's THEIR blog, after all. But I must say, to only allow or approve of glowing comments can make the blog a bit dull. If ad revenue is a big motivator, then welcoming as much traffic as possible would be the most lucrative strategy. Plus one never knows when one will receive a 'critical' comment that adds real value or input to the topic; the blogger may not be the only one with a valuable perspective. But if simply enjoying the process of documenting and virtually 'scrapbooking' one's life is the objective, then screen at will! I think both are worthy.

Regardless, I wish all here well!

    3. I think the problem with the original comment was the "tone of voice", not so much the content. This made the comment come across as very critical and unkind. You could say something like "I really like the picture but the flowers are covering a lot of it. Have you thought of using a lower arrangement that would not hide so much of the picture?". And remember, we are all different and have different taste in decorating, etc. Wouldn't it be boring if all our houses looked the same?

BTW, I think the room is really pretty!! I can't wait to see your window treatments.

    4. sorry i am just a gay what does a guy know right. the hole point i was trying to make is if you lve something why do you make it so hard to see by putting big things in frount of it. i thought i should tell you all that i am a guy so if you comment more it is he not she. sorry again

    5. It is too big, not "to big".

  9. It takes a lot of guts to put ourselves out in the world when we are decorating and showing part of our lives to strangers. I'm sure the anonymous person thought they were being helpful, and I am sorry your feelings were hurt, mine would have been too. I hope you feel better after that second cup of coffee! and I hope the anonymous person
doesn't beat themselves up all day for saying something.

  14. Love the chest. The room looks great as does the rest of your home that you have shared. My mom always taught us "if you can't say something nice then don't say anything. This is your home that you are sharing on your blog. You have the right to decorate it any way you like. I happen to like the way you decorate it. Hope your day gets better with each cup of coffee. Have a great week. Sheila

  15. Love everything! The rug with the chest with the rectangular lines of the art are wonderful. Great looking, Yvonne. And, boy of boy, do I know what you mean when you say things are a little "over my budget" as everything seems SO expensive these days.
    Big hug, my friend.

  31. Yvonne - I adore it - everything looks GREAT.

As for the first comment? Just get rid of anonymous comments. If someone is going to be so strongly suggesting other ideas, then get the nerve to put their name next to their strong opinions.

I think that would have eliminated it - and your reaction was dead-on.

I see plenty of the painting - it's just softly "framed" with some other great and nice things is all - love it. Don't change a thing!

And PLEASE come visit and bring some of your amazing hydrangeas - purdy purdy purdy!!!!

  34. Yvonne, you are truly blessed with a gift to create such a beautiful home. I commend you for sharing your home and a portion of your life with us. It is unfortunate that you would receive hurtful words concerning your interpretation of beauty in your home and how you choose to display it. I for one think that you are truly talented and you inspire me and a great deal of others. Continue to do the awesome job that you were created to do & thank you for sharing a portion of your life and your beautiful home with us! Be blessed!

  35. Do I dare wade in, I’m a foodie, but I love your work. I learned from working in a law office that tone does not always translate. I think if we are going to comment we should reread it just in case it sounds harsh. With that said, I am crazy about the rug, and how it ties in with the painting. I love your windows and the color of your room. You have it just right. I also think the Curlacue ties in with the windows, so I think you have an excellent design going. I would be happy, as is, so if you intend to add more please let us know, because it is lovely as is.

Oh, and one thing more, why does one negative sting more that fifty positives? I have only been blogging publicly for a short time, but I block any negative, because I would not like it if someone came into my home and said something rude – same goes for my blog.

  37. I was in love with the dresser the minute I opened your blog this morning Yvonne and then after I read that the curlicues were raised I was just over the moon for this piece. They look like strands of pearls to me and I think you've made the perfect choice for your room. Its hard sometimes to wait for "just the right" piece but this one sure fits the bill. Thanks for sharing.

  39. Yvonne, opinions are akin to certain anatomical features - everyone has them! Your living room is really pretty and it looks so inviting. That chest is definitely made for that room in that spot! You could paint the clock, however, it actually looks fine as is and creates balance of the darks and lights in the room...your choice!
    Enjoy your day. Bonnie G.

  41. Fabulous room...awesome chest, and I know you'd like window treatments, but I'm loving your beautiful bare windows right now...at least for Summer, but I can see that you'd probably want window treatments for privacy. :) I'm one of those people who loves looking outdoors and go around opening curtains and blinds in the morning. Your windows are so pretty and photograph really well. Can you tell I have a thing about windows? I have some small ones in our bedroom that make me crazy because of the shape/size, and I've always been "challenged" to find window treatments to hide them, or make them look longer.

  42. I for one love the big pieces on the chest! A chest of that fortitude would not benefit from dinky accessories!

Paint the clock? I'm not sure, but I agree, move it somewhere else. It's a bit dark now for the room. Is there a way to strip it and lighten the wood? That would look pretty. I think every room needs some real wood.

    Gorgeous Yvonne... xo marlis

My mother and I enjoy all of your posts. I had to chuckle when I read the first "negative" comment. I am a language arts teacher and noticed the grammatical and punctuation errors. Statements lack power when they are poorly written. Keep up all your inspiring posts. My mother is in love with the chest, is it still in stock? She looked but couldn't find it.
