It's fair week this week!
This is the best week of the year in my neck of the woods! Fair week! When the whole community comes out to walk the fairgrounds and meet friends and neighbors and be a part of this treasured tradition!
We all collectively cheer for who grew the largest sunflower and the kiddie who caught the pig in the greased pig chase. We ooooh and aaaah at the talented handiwork and delicious baked and canned goods our community produces. We hold our breath as we all wait to see who wins a ribbon!
Livestock and every kinds of farm animals are proudly displayed. You can hear them and smell them even before you hit the fairgrounds!
High school girls compete for the coveted crown of the FAIR QUEEN. And little girls follow her around and ask her if she is Cinderella.
There are no carnival rides... only strollers and wheelchairs. We make our own entertainment...
There are no outside vendors or food trucks. The band boosters make a mean hamburger and the baseball team has the best fries you have ever eaten. A funnel cake and a milkshake are a must... they are lovingly made by our own FFA and school board!
We all know to wear old shoes... our fair is Agriculture at it's core. Mud and manure fly! But that's okay... we all expect it... it's part of the ambiance.
This is a true slice of Americana... God Bless America and apple pie. You bet! It is the best of us... the kindest of us... it is really deep down inside what we are made of!

Your fair sounds wonderful, I've never been to an old fashioned one like that~have fun! Your menu sounds great, I LOVE the breadstick focaccia recipe, it is addicting! I am going to add that to my menu this week as well!

Love the fairs in the mid-west. Your menu sounds so good - will have to try a few of your menus.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.

Great menu and your fair sounds like so much fun! So blessed!
ReplyDeleteWow super menu Yvonne...those staked potatoes look scrumptious! Fair week sounds like fun but I had to laugh when I read about the greased pig chase. The closest I ever got to a greased pig was when I was in college at Millersville and someone let a greased pig loose in our cafeteria. It took some time for the campus police to catch the poor thing.
ReplyDeleteHere's wishing you a fabulous fair week!

I love the idea of no rides at the fair. Just good commumity spirit.

I tried your recipe for Beef Barley soup and was wowed! It was just fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing your slow cooker recipes. Tonight was your Slow Cooker Estofando and again I/my family was wowed.

Your fair sounds like a great time Yvonne! Well, for everyone except maybe the pig:@) Have fun!
ReplyDeleteYvonne, This sounds like the kind of fair I would love to visit. I enjoy the agricultural elements--the fruits, veggies, quilts, jams and jellies and livestock and even the wood cutting competitions. We used to have the best fair like that on Martha's Vineyard. I wonder if it is still there? You have made me curious! Yum, all your recipes sound delicious, especially the salmon cakes with pecans! Linda
ReplyDeleteI can't seem to find your On the Menu linkup for this week....?
ReplyDeleteI'm your newest follower - added you to my G+ circles - found you through Kim's post today, but have caught glimpses before. Can't wait to explore all you offer - these food items look amazing as does that pillow made from a placemat - love that graphic!
ReplyDeleteI love the Fair! We've gone to the Canfield, OH fair for years...it is always the weekend closest to Labor Day & it ALWAYS rains at least one day!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try making your focaccia this week...it really looks yummy!
Hugs,
Rett
p.s. If you replied to my email, I did not get it. Mega issues with blocked senders when I imported email addys to my new computer. *sigh* I THINK I've got it fixed now.
I linked with your party today but never could find your linky...??
ReplyDeleteOur fair week just ended this past weekend! Our kids loved seeing (not necessarily smelling) all of the animals and enjoying ice cream from a local creamery! So fun!
ReplyDeleteYvonne, I'm a little confused about your slow cooker refried beans recipe. It says at the bottom to put half the beans into a large casserole and top with cheese. Why only half of the beans?
