A New Life For A Little Table
I always say that lipstick can do wonders for a woman! It brightens up our faces, gives luster to our lips and is an instant pick me up.
As lipstick is to women, so a coat of paint is to old furniture!
I purchased a set of prettily designed tables years ago at a garage sale. They have been hiding out under tablecovers, books, dishes, lamps and furbelows (don't you love that word?~ a ruffled cover or ornamentation) all this time. They were in very poor condition and were not good quality. But I thought their lines were so lovely.
I decided to jump on the white painted furniture bandwagon. But as you can see, I am doing it in baby steps. No huge projects... yet!
I am so taken with all the ethereal white stuff out there. Some white inspired rooms I see in magazines and on blogs make me swoon.... BUT I have 3 big reservations.
1. Unless white is done right, it can look dead! Like someone was let loose with a spray gun full of contractor grade white paint. No contrast, no interest, no life! Is MY age showing? This brings me to my second reservation...
2. Covering beautiful wood! Now, I'm not talking about my Sears french provincial bedroom suite that I had as a teenager... it needs more than a coat of white paint. But I have lovingly saved for and collected beautiful wood pieces... rich mahogany, warm cherry, homey oak~ all working together to make StoneGable inviting. Wood is alive and gives depth and richness to a room. I love white woodwork and white slipcovers, and maybe could even love a white sideboard (if the wood is in poor condition or quality, and a coat of paint would give it new life). I think I'll leave white paint off of my beautiful wood pieces, even though they may temporarily be out of vogue. Which brings me to my last reservation...
3.W hite is a trend! With the exception of white painted kitchens, white woodwork and white porches. But they have been around for a very, very long time!Oh, I know it FEELS as though white EVERYTHING could be a classic someday. But sadly for many, it will look dated someday soon too! Then the blogs will be filled with "How To Strip Paint" tutorials.
I say, don't put your eggs all in one style basket.
Now, having said ALL THAT~ I am dabbling with a little white paint. And I am just thrilled.
I lightly sanded this little table and primed it. And put 3 thin coats of white paint on it with a soft bristled brush. I chose a warmer white paint. Remember, not a fan of white white paint! And finally, when I was happy with the results, sprayed the table with a couple of coats of fast drying Polyurethane in a satin finish.
It was pretty painted all white, but not very interesting. So, I used an acrylic paint in a goldish taupe and painted the indents in the legs and the cross brace. Using a damp paper towel, I swiped over it to blur it and give it an uneven aged look. I did this before I polyurethaned it.
I painted the rim and the indent of the table. Again, I dabbed a damp paper towel over it to give it an uneven look.
Finally I beat it up a bit! The edges were rubbed with a fine grade sand paper to expose some of the original mahogany wood. Dents in the top were caused by a wooden meat tenderizer. FUN! All done before those final coats of polyurethane.
The result is a warm white table that has interest and a little age.
I am painting it's twin tomorrow. How does aqua sound?

very pretty! Lately I've eyed several pieces in my home that I think would look good with a white paint do-over. Just not convinced that I want to take the plunge! It's a lot harder to scrape that paint off than it is to put it on. I am thinking about painting my old oak coffee table though. I'll be sure to show you if I do! :)
ReplyDeleteVery pretty. I love the lines on this table. I agree with you on the white thing. It has to be done right. I have kept most of my wood things, because I love the warmth of wood. BUT I am sometimes tempted with certain things. I do have some white painted chairs that are much nicer in the white (but then they went through a fire at a local restaurant years ago so paint is what happened!)
ReplyDeleteHello Yvonne! I feel the same way you do...I LOVE the white rooms when they're done right but I worry that one day they will go out of ..as you say 'vogue'. I agree...if a piece of wood furniture has seen better days and it's not a very valuable piece then I can see painting it. I've got a few pieces of furniture around here I'm thinking of painting...I just haven't gotten the nerve to do it yet. One day soon. Thanks for showing us your finshed product... it really is a wonderful improvement! Have a wonderful day...Maura :)
ReplyDeleteGorgoeus tables and I do like them in the warmer white with your taupe accents. I am also an admirer of the white trend but a bit shy of it. So far, I've not painted anything white yet...although I will paint about anything I can get to stand still black, red or pistacio green, lol!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!

Yvonne, I like the new look for this sweet table. This gives me some inspiration to do a few things around here. Well, at least dream about doing it. LOL
ReplyDeleteGreat job! ~ Sarah
How timely--I'm thinking of doing the same thing to a small, two-shelved end/night table. It's now mahogany but in bad shape. It's an interesting piece but not fine furniture. You've done a beautiful job on that small table. I'm wondering if I can come close! And, it perfectly shows off that vase of vibrant flowers.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Bonnie
Yvonne, that looks like a perfect table to change into a white painted piece. It turned out beautifully and I can't wait to see the aqua one. Like you, I prefer darker, rich wood tones. I would like to have one room with bright colors and white painted furniture though. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteI think you did a wonderful job on your table.
ReplyDeleteI am in total agreement about the furniture. I truly love all of the white out there, but it's just not practical for me. There is so much oak, cherry, etc., in my house and I can't even think of painting it. I do love to add whites in my decorating and I have done a few small pieces of white, but just can't do much.
Yours is just perfect.
so pretty!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a great job! Is there anything you can't do???!! My favorite parts are the distressing and most importantly the goldy-taupe detailing! That is what made the table perfect and will keep it from looking too trendy!

Wow, what you put on the table is so attractive. Thanks for the great explanation of how you painted the table. It looks so professional.
ReplyDeleteDo you know how to do the new bleached out almost like grayed fencing after it aged look? I've seen the new painted gray look and the bleached out and I have wondered how you accomplish this.
What a great job you did and how pretty the table looks? Your addition of a little color was just the right touch.

Yvonne,
ReplyDeleteYour little table looks wonderful! I have a very hard time painting things white too. This turned out just perfect. Love the seashells displayed on it!
Thanks for your sweet comment and for stopping by.
Sherry
Love this! Isn't it so great finding these treasures at yard sales? My husband and I are all about the "could" be of various things. I love the table arrangement! You are so talented!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Jill
The lines of these tables are beautiful and I think the white paint will add interest to a room filled with lots of wood. Also, I can't wait to see the aqua one, where are these tables going to be used?
ReplyDeleteOh, aren't you happy you painted!
ReplyDeleteLooks fabulous! Your tablescape
is beautiful also.

I love what you did with the tables. I really like the sepia toned overwash...and great tablescape too. Diana
ReplyDeleteIt looks great!!! Your going to love that table forever now!
ReplyDeleteBig change in that table and it looks awesome! Great job!
ReplyDeleteBonjour Yvonne,
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job! Love how you added the gold - white does need some life to it or it can look washed out. I've decided I need to start a Stone Gable file for all your recipes and projects!!
Have a good evening!
Mimi
I totally agree with your observations about painting furniture. Maybe it's because I have been extremely lucky to have solid walnut, cherry, and mahogany-many of these older pieces refinished by my dad and other dedicated craftmen. In Virginia, oak is not especially prized, but I would find it hard to paint a piece of that. Now, I must confess that I had a very mediocre four poster bedroom set as a young girl I have no idea where it came from. But my mother and I had no problem painting it, and I doubt that whoever owns it today would want to spend the time stripping it.
ReplyDeleteVery nice. You may just decide to jump on the white bandwagon! I love white when it is not overdone. Carla
ReplyDeleteHi Yvonne, what a wonderful painting job!! I agree, those tables have great lines and just needed a little lovin'. The attention to detail with the gold paint and the distressing was a great idea. I just picked up a wooden glider and spray painted it a soft creamy white this afternoon. I found a great seat cushion at Pier One the other day - which actually cost much more than the glider ($10 at a Barn Sale) but I loved the colors in the fabric! Hope all is well! Ciao, bella!

ReplyDeleteI agree with 100 percent of your points! I love how this table turned out!!!
ReplyDeleteTrends and I don't get along because I am always late to get around to them and then everyone else has moved on. So...I just grab what I like from each trend that passes by and call myself eclectic!
I do so love rich woods!
Becky K.
I think it looks fabulous .. you are a very good painter and you made this table like new-- I mean aged new,, oh sheesh, you know what I mean lol.... aqua sounds great to me so I'll be back to see how that comes out...

Yvonne, it looks wonderful. I do agree that a beautiful wood shouldn't be painted, but I do seem to find myself craving things a bit lighter and simpler these days. I may make a few changes when we move

Hi Yvonne! Oh, you did good! The table itself is very pretty and I love the shape and details. You did a great job bringing new life to it! I'm in love with your pretty floral arrangement too.
ReplyDeleteHope you're doing well.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
You are so right about the tables looking better with a little 'lipstick'. They look great in white.
ReplyDeleteI like how you put it, too. I'm a fan of white, but all white doesn't work for me. I too LOVE wood. And black painted pieces. Scrubbed pine, knotty pine and a handsome oak. My style is a bit rustic and I N.E.E.D. some wood. But since I'm more comfortable without too much colour, the whites and neutrals go well with my wood.
I see many of us have reservations about getting out the white paint. I've been looking at a metal tea cart that was painted white and wondering if I could do the same with my dark green one.
ReplyDeleteWith a dark cherry dining room set in the same room it would really draw attention and it may not hold the same appeal down the road.
Your table turned out nice; if the piece is a found battered item it deserves a new life.
The table turned out cute, I love the accents! Your cloche with the shells is very pretty too! Can't wait to see the aqua one:@)
ReplyDeleteYou did a fab job painting the table white... and I love the setting on it.

Yvonne,
ReplyDeleteThe table looks just great! I love the vignette you have created for it, too!
I love how you did this table, Yvonne! The addition of the goldish paint was the finishing touch! I have nevr painted a piece of furniture and probably never will, but I love your table. Now, where did you put it??? I love the arrangement and shells on it! Hope you have a great week! XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteI so know what you mean about white! I love looking at everybody else's but COLOR makes me happy.
ReplyDeletePS The table is precious.:)
I too love the dreamy look of white furniture and rooms but there is nothing like the richness of good wood furniture. It makes me feel bad to see so many young women bloggers covering everything with white paint (and black paint too). It's starting to look very cookie cutter. Decorating can be so much more fun than that. I love color and florals and stripes...it's all so fun to let your imagination go to work. And color lifts your spirits...everyday when I walk into my sunny yellow gingham kitchen it makes me smile on the inside. I just love it.
ReplyDeleteThis is another of those times we are very much alike. I love all the shabby white that I see on the blogs and when I go into a store now that carries all the pretty things to go with it...I swoon. However, if you look around my house you will see dark oaks, walnuts and cherry for the most part. I've started painting a few accessories and adding silver and shabby little "pops" here and there...but, I can't bring myself to paint any of the furniture...yet!
ReplyDeleteI do love the table and all the things on it!
Your table turned out beautifully! Can't wait to see the aqua one!
ReplyDeleteDonna
i love this.. I am contemplating painting a green hutch that came with a house from long ago. I love green, just not this green, I have yet to come up with a plant. And since the piece has already been painted, it's soo much easier to paint it the second time! Your table is beautiful, and it's your attention to detail that makes it so!
ReplyDeleteThis is so nicely done, Yvonne!
ReplyDeleteand I agree with everything you said about painting over beautiful wood.
Most of our furniture is medium oak... I do have a few mahogany pieces and even some vintage oldies that have always been painted.
I love how you wrote that wood is ALIVE...
The trim paint is done so beautifully ~ you have the perfect touch~
Well... I'd better get to bed... it's nearly midnight...Our guests have gone to bed...and tomorrow's a big family day!
take care, Yvonne!
blessings always ~ Maria
ps. I was talking about your wonderful blog to my guests tonight... How wonderful it is, Yvonne! Thanks for "being out here!"
Wow...what a job you did...it is so so lovely my friend. Hugs for a great mid week. xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteThis turned out justs lovely. I love how you told us all of your step. The goldish taupe really added to the soft look. I love all of the aqua I am seeing out in the blog world. I want something aqua now and I know just the corner it should go in. Too bad I gave away several items while I was cleaning out last Fall - before bloggin! Oh, I can't look back.
ReplyDeleteYou've given that sweet little table a whole new life, Yvonne. I want to do something similar to the cabinet in my bathroom, but am dragging my feet. Once I apply some paint there is no turning back. Yikes.
ReplyDeleteHi Yvonne~ ~ ~Love the little white table Welcome to the world of white! You know I love to see pieces mixed, white with a dark or painted piece in the room. Almost any color goes great with white so I say Mix It Up! I achieved my goal when I moved into this victorian house where it was so dark that the plan was to paint the furniture white to lighten it up and create more of a lush gypsy look. Now I need more layers of opulant rich colored fabrics.
ReplyDeleteSee you soon,.
~ ~Ahrisha~ ~
Oh, that's beautiful. You did a fabulous job. And your flowers add an extra element of beauty.
ReplyDeleteI must say I agree with you on the beauty of wood. While I love white funiture, I could never make all my furniture white. My husband and son are into woodworking (they have a small hobby-type business on Etsy). One of the things they made was a hope chest for our daughter. It is made of a gorgeous African hardwood called sapele (suh pee lee). The wood seems to be alive!! It is exquisite. To cover it over would be a crime.
Another favorite wood, which they have made guitars out of, is from Hawaii. It's called koa. To cover that with ANY paint would be a horrible mistake.
Anyhow, though, you did a fabulous job. can't wait to see the aqua table.
have a wonderful day.
Hugs,
Patti
Good job Yvonne, but I know what you mean about white. The only other "classic" white i can think of is bathroom fixtures. Nothing can date a space faster than raspberry toilets ;)
ReplyDeleteYvonne you breathed new life into that table. It is so pretty. I love to paint furniture especially when I am rescuing pieces from the past. I love how you created the most beautiful vignette on top of the table after it was painted, just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHave a Happy day filled with creativity!
xoxo
