Company is coming and I wanted to set a comfortable table that would enhance conversation and good food. This red and white table is not at all what I had in mind. I originally wanted to use blue and white plates with some citron green accents. So what happened? KMart, that's what! On a recent trip to fill a RX and get hair spray and lip gloss I could not keep my cart from veering to the kitchen isle.
Then I spotted this lovely tablcloth! And it literally jumped into my cart! Well, one thing lead to another and by the time I could drag myself away from that tempting isle, I had some beautiful things in my cart.
The pretty red and white floral tablecloth is from KMart's Country Living collection. I was surprised how nice the quality is for a very reasonable price.
A small and sweet ruffle edges the tablecloth in a complimentary fabric. This gives the table a relaxed, country look.
Matching napkins are gathered up in a creamy white distressed cutwork napkin ring. (Country Living, Kmart). I tucked another white battenburg edged napkin in with the red and white beauty to give extra interest.
The placemats, my favorites for years, are a nice coordinate.
The dishes reflect the colors of the table- red and white. Just two plates, but each one makes a big statement.
White leaf and berry plates (HomeGoods) and these beautifully embossed red dessert plates (Jaclyn Smith, Kmart) boldly anchor each place setting. The red plates were very reasonable and are a lovely quality. The textural design on these lovely dishes give each placesetting a big punch of style!
Red butter knives rest on a white bread plate. A small red fork sits at the top of the place setting waiting be used for dessert (HomeGoods).
Red stemmed glassware (Charter House, Williamsburg) are in keeping with the color scheme.
More red- the mugs (Jaclyn Smith Collection, Kmart) match the salad plates. These mugs have a subtle raised diamond checked pattern. Like the salad plates the quality of these mugs are wonderful and the price modest.
The white bisque rooster is the center of attention of this table. He has been scratching around my kitchen for 20 years! He doesn't look so bad for being an old bird (not KMart-sorry)!
Small creamer glasses make perfect vases for little individual arrangements at each place setting. Red and creamy white sweetheart roses combined with "fluff" welcome each guest. The flowers, bought at the grocery store for under $10.00, are a frugal lovely touch that tells each guest they are special. At the end of the night everyone gets to take home their little arangement.
It is such a joy to be able to send my guest home with a little token of their evening at StoneGable. This is something I do often.
Etched red candles are perch on tall white distressed wooden canldesticks (KMart).
The Menu:
Arugula Salad with Shaved Parmesan Cheese, Pine Nuts and Lemon Vinaigrette
Sauteed Rice Pilaf
Roasted Aspargus
Crusty Bread/ Herbed Butter
Strawberry Shortcake
It was so much fun to let this table evolve! Especially because I am so fond of red and white tables!

Oh MY! It is just beautiful! Alma and I were checking that Country Living out in Kmart..it really is pretty.
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful table, Yvonne..your guests will love it!
Love your setting- i have been pleased with some things kmart has carried lately- esp dishware-we have lots of kids over and have to be careful!!!Nice to have something to send home with guests-lovely memento. When I think back to your post- the rooster is what i remember the most-will have to check the markets for one similiar-like that he is all white.
ReplyDeleteYou ALWAYS set a lovely table and I am ALWAYS impressed- you make it seem effortless.
Yvonne, I adore this- red and white is just a favorite of mine. My Nonna's kitchen was red and white and I loved it. Just beautiful!
ReplyDeletexoxo Pattie
What a beautiful table! The menu sounds perfect for your beautiful table...enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteYvonne, I have not made a trip to Kmart in years, but it looks like I will be heading that way now. ;) My oh my is this red and white so appealing to me. I love it that you tell us where everything comes from. I had to giggle about the old rooster scratching around your kitchen for years! LOL! Just curious, did you just buy the two place settings or several more? That's always hard for me just because I like so many. Two could be fun, but then will I wish I had more??!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for a huge treat for the eye.
Donna
Yvonne, that is one of the prettiest tables I have seen this year...it is just stunning! That is a beautiful tablecloth. It is good to know that WalMart is getting a nicer line of dining wares than past years. I am sure your guests are going to be very impressed with your tablescape.
ReplyDeleteSuch a BEAUTIFUL tablescape!!!! I love red and white together. Martina
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous tablescape...I love red, it's my favorite color and you did it up perfectly...Unless I missed something I was waiting to hear where you got that great red and white covered little box on the table...it matched everything perfectly...it looks like it came with the tablecloth...Sue @ Rue-Mouffetard
ReplyDelete1. Absolutely gorgeous table. I love it all, and the menu looks scrumptious.
ReplyDelete2. I think you've just been to Savannah also. So nice to see inside the pink house. My parents ate there once, but I just snapped my photo as we drove by, loving the pink, and dreaming of what the inside would be like.
3. I think we are kindred spirits! I look forward to your letter writing post! I love to write letters and they leave so much for posterity, unlike emails dashed off without much thought, usually never to be read again. I love it in Jane Austen's EMMA (I think it is) when they pour over letters, examining the penmanship, figuring out the mood of the writer, etc.
4. Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog!
You always set the most amazing tables. I love the red and white theme. I am glad to hear that the Country Living collection is good quality. I have looked at it on-line, but have not gone to K-mart yet. I love the diamond pattern on the mugs. Just beautiful.

I love RED....BTW, I was at Tarjay today and found red plastic handled place settings on special. $8 for service for 4 and fairly decent quality for this type of flat ware. I bought 2 sets. Just think of all the times I can use these! Christmas, July 4, Memorial Day, Valentine's Day...and various points in between!
ReplyDeleteThis was just charming! Who would have thought that Kmart would have such a cute table cloth! This would be such a wonderful table setting for a breakfast or brunch...your rosebud bouquet give a ways are just charming and what a nice thing to do! I always wonder if all the tablescapers actually use their table settings or if they just set these up for fun, but it sounds like you actually use yours!
