ADDING DETAIL... ONE LAYER AT A TIME

What's you favorite part of decorating? Conceptualizing a design, the hunt for the perfect pieces, choosing colors and fabric? Mine is adding details.

You could call me the embellishment queen. I love to take something and make it even better! Fussing and fluffing and adding layers of detail.

Here's the newest layer in the living room...

GALVANIZED TIN IN THE SUMMER KITCHEN

Grey and speckled... utilitarian and sturdy... galvanized metal remind me of summer.

Probably because I have a big obsession with aged galvanized watering cans.

I found some new galvanized tin for a little vignette in my summer kitchen...

NEW PLANTER AND VIGNETTE

I am slowly finding pieces for the dining room. For me, it takes time. New things, shuffling things, adding things, editing things, painting things, sewing things... all to update our dining room.

On a recent trip to Williamsburg, Va. I found a new planter for the buffet...

It is a stylized pineapple... the Southern sign of hospitality! Even thought I don't hail from the south... I like to think I have the heart of a southerner!

When I found this artful looking pineapple planter I just had to bring it home to live in my dining room. I could not wait to plant a fluffy lacy fern in it!

I feel so sorry for any plant that comes into my home. I sorta consider them long lasting cut flowers... just greener. Poor plants, they have less than a 50-50 chance of surviving for any length of time.

The little silver shell came from Savannah (I always say, Savannah is like finding the MOTHERSHIP!!!!)... also a stop our trip.

I switched up the lamp (HomeGoods) on the buffet with the one in the foyer. I think it's size and visual weight works better in the dining room.

For now, I added a plate stand stacked with white dishes and covered them with a cloche. I'm not sure how long it will stay here. I have something else in mind... if only I could find it!

Two silver candle sticks flank the plates. The candles are battery operated and give off a pretty soft glow in the evening.

I would like to add a gilded framed chalkboard to the buffet vignette. It would be fun to write menus on it when we have company.

Next week I'll be sewing the curtains!!!

A WARM WELCOME

I'm "fluffing" again. That's what I call fussing... adding and editing touches to a room... mixing and matching...

I got two little additions to add to the J&J guest room...

If you have been a reader for awhile you will know my love of pillows!

Recently I received a pretty package that smelled of lavender... and inside were two darling "welcome" pillows I had ordered from SUTTON PLACE DESIGNS and two grain sack lavender sachet to tuck in a drawer as a sweet gift!

My friend Ann, from ON SUTTON PLACE makes incredible pillows, gain sack items, towels, table runners, aprons and lavender sachets with a very french/fresh/country feel! Her blog is filled with great designs, really good food and sewing projects.  She is a must read for me!

These beautifully made linen pillows have the words...

 and ...

...machine embroidered on them. 

 I am wild about them!

Don't they make the perfect statement for a guest bed?

I am still on a search for an old map of Lancaster County... but I did find an old window to frame it in.

Once that project is done and hung over the bed, I'll feel like this room is complete... sorta!  Are we really ever done fluffing?

Decorative Touches for Mirrors

Mirrors are a favorite here at StoneGable. Their beautiful reflective quality, the way they throw light and take up space while enlarging it is so attractive to me.

They also look fabulous when decorated with a little embellishment. (And I AM the embellishment queen!)

I tucked this pinkish berry garland around the mirror last fall and enjoyed it so much there that it has stayed.

The mirror is in my "Bohemian" downstairs bathroom. I LOVE this wallpaper, and will probably never remove it. The walls are decorated with a collection of hand painted vintage trays and other hand painted items that are similarly related. ( Later this fall the bathroom vanity cabinet will be painted red and glazed- look for an upcoming post.)The mirror was originally my Mother's and hung above our piano since I was a child.

I think little embellishment on a mirror can soften it and give it such interest! This old mirror looks so fetching with a little bit of green gracefully draped over it.

Small wreath hung from beautiful ribbon also give a mirror panache.
