RED, WHITE AND BLUE SUMMER FAMILY ROOM

Even though it does not feel like summer here at StoneGable I am getting ready for it!

Decorating in easy going summer details and lots of reds, whites and blues!

This is why I love a neutral family room... it can be transformed by the addition of other colors! This summer I'm feeling very patriotic... here's little splashes of color on my sofa and coffee table...

When I think of summer I think of flags flying, so I'm taking red, white and blue and using my natural covered sofa as a background for all the great color!

Our Modern Farmhouse and American is a match made in decorator heaven!!!!

If you are a StoneGable follower, you will know that I can never have enough pillows! My sofa is filled with them.

The anchor pillows are the nubby woven jute pillows that rest at each end of the sofa...

I bought them last fall and thought that they would be a nice seasonal detail, but they work with everything I put them with and I love their texture!

We have at least one quilt on hand all year round. I got it on a great sale!
It is a "teen" quilt for a single bed, but it works great here!
I tend to keep my house cool in the heat of summer so the girls in the family love to snuggle under quilts!

When they complain that it is too cold I say, "Put another layer on... if I have to take off one more thing it's going to get very ugly"!!!

The star of the pillows show is the flag pillow, of course!

I have a couple of flag projects lined up for June... I can't wait to share them with you!

The pillow tucked behind the flag pillow is a sham for a bed pillow! It was on super-duper sale!!! Score!

It's stuffed with a big gel pillow so when the kids come over they can throw it on the floor and use it for their heads. Who says you can't use a pillow sham for a bed on the family room sofa!

The coffee table vignette changes almost weekly at StoneGable! I keep it pretty informal.

One thing that remains constant are some of my favorite decorating books I am reading!

I usually keep a large basket on my coffee table... to keep the books neat!

And I've had these deer sheds on top of my books for awhile. Beau the wonder dog likes to try to sneak away with them!

A big galvanized bucket holds faux geraniums. Soon I'll be able to put flowers from my garden in their place!
Is is bad form to use artificial flowers? I love them... as long as they are a good fake! What do you think?

A wire basket holds our first set of Bocce balls! We are all avid Bocce players! As you can see these were well "loved"!

We are a competitive family and love games... and there is a running bet with the "boys" in our family. If one team wins all the points in a Bocce game the other team must run naked around the house. I pray if this every happens that the corn is high!!!!

I'm adding more patriotic colors to the rest of the family room and I'll share that in a couple of weeks when I will be part of a SUMMER HOUSE TOUR.

  1. I use faux flowers all the time and love them. I think the key is to buy really nice ones. They cost a little more, but over time, they are a wise investment. I'm getting ready to put out some faux poppies and they look so real and last all summer instead of a few days. I always look forward to changing out my seasonal fauxs.
Love your summer room - it looks sooooooooo inviting.

  2. It's beautiful Yvonne. Your blog is so inspiring. I am a first grade teacher and am doing summer school this year to save up money for a neutral sofa and two chairs so I, too, can change through the seasons. Can you tell me the brand and color of your family room sofa. It's looks cream instead of white. I would love to order one like that down her in Arkansas.

    1. Hi Barbara, The sofa is a "natural" color and not white. My white slipcovered sofa is up in your sitting room in our master bedroom. This sofa came from Lamps Plus and was part of my winnings for being Blog Of The Year. It's a steal... it's on sale for $699.00 and is very comfortable!!! 6. So very lovely, Yvonne! Can I confess I just took the bunny off the front door yesterday? ~hanging head in shame~ With all the DIY projects we've been doing there hasn't been a spare second to even haul Easter to the attic! So I will just enjoy the beautiful Americana in your family room! Love 'ya!

    1. Good Morning, Rose! All the pillows came from Pottery Barn Outlet. We have one just 5 miles away. I feel like "Norm" on the show Cheers when I go in there... everyone knows my name and hugs me. They are probably so glad to see me because I certainly help their bottom line!

  10. Your family room looks lovely. So festive and cozy! I adore faux florals for arrangements, especially for arrangements that are a constant aspect of your décor....but when guests are over for special occasions, I like fresh!

  11. I love your red, white and blue theme for the summer. It is a very patriotic colour scheme and I wish our flag had some blue in it still. lol I also wish I'd purchased a white sofa instead of a sage green one, as white is so practical to decorate around. Your vignettes look wonderful and I love the basket of bocce balls.

  12. It looks wonderful with all the pops of colour. You are making me rethink my colour schemes - neutral is definitely the way to go. I have mostly cream and beiges so it allows me some flexibility, but nothing like yours.

  19. The sofa and coffee table look wonderful. That you actually used the balls make it all the better. Since you asked, I'm not a fan of artificial floral but they are certainly not as distracting when place among other more cherished items. Sometimes just need them for a pop of color or height when the real thing is not available. Agree with Parsimonious above that real are best for the dining table..

  20. Everything is perfectly summer ready! Those bocce balls - amazing! And, of course I was cracking up with the story about the boys! Yet another rainy day for us, but hope it cuts down on the pollen!

  24. Artificial is fine as long as like you said, "they look real". They're a lot better at making faux flowers these days than they were a few years ago. I can't plant anything. We're moving from Lynchburg to Northern Michigan next week. I'll have to wait at least until the second week in June when I can start decorating and YOU have inspired me. I LOVE your pillows. I will have an neutral living room too so I'll be able to do the same. Can't wait!! Looking forward to your June posts for sure! -Bev

  25. I love it!!! You have a great eye for putting things together!!! I decorate with Red, White and Blue year round in my living room, kitchen and bedroom. We are a retired military family and I just love those colors. Normally my garden reflects an Americana theme as well. This year I went with red and yellow flowers for my son who is going into the Marines in Oct.

Not sure what direction I am going for as yet. Still contemplating . Thanks for the inspiration!

  28. Love your style, Yvonne. I too love your sofa and am pleased you gave us a way to purchase it. I laughed out loud with the bocce players story. I purchased faux white tulips this spring and smile each time I'm greeted by them. Going to add my red pillow with my blues. Oh how I wish there was a nearby PB outlet.

  30. Yvonne, I love your Americana style. Adorable down to every last detail. How wonderful that your couch is neutral, allowing for the holiday/special occasion to take over! I'm headed to the fridge for a refreshing glass of lemonade and will lift my glass to thank you for the inspiration!

  31. Thank you, your ideas are very inspiring! The faux flowers are great, sometimes you need that touch of color and using the real thing isn't available or practical in that spot. I think the reason faux fell out of favor, we've all seen it - an arrangement placed on a table and left there, forever. . . faded, and dusty. Buy good ones, keep them dust free and change them periodically.

  32. It's gorgeous! Those colors are so cheerful and remind me of a fun beach house! In fact I think I will pin some to my "future beach house pinterest board"....although I don't know how far in the future I will be getting that beach house!..hey I can dream!
