THE ART OF STACKING DISHES

To say I have a little crush on dishes is quite an understatement!

I love love love them!

And one of my favorite ways to use them is to stack them! Using stacks of dishes in a tablescape gives them an alluring and dimensional quality and a steal-the-show way to be displayed!

One of the biggest benefits of stacking dishes is that I can use the same dishes over and over again and get a new look every time!

Here's a few tips for creating beautiful stacks of dishes...

A STACK IS 3 DISHES OR MORE

A stack of dishes does not have to be tall.  Start with 3 pretty dishes that work well together and... TA-DA a pretty stack is born!

How easy is that?

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE EDGES

What makes a stack of dishes soooooo appealing are all the pretty edges that peek out from underneath each other.

Choose dishes of that have interesting edges or rims.

ALTERNATE DISH COLOR

Using different colored dishes work just as well as dishes with interesting edges for making a fetching stack!

When you can mix color and great edges... it's a real winner!

ANCHOR THE STACK

Add a pretty placemat or runner or even a napkin under a stack of dishes to anchor them to the table.

See how the blue straw placemats sets the stack of dishes! LOVE blues and whites together!

ADD SOMETHING SPECIAL TO THE TOP OF THE STACK

Add a special bowl or fancy napkin or a little object that goes with the theme of the table to the top off the dish stack.

It makes the stack more important!

Isn't this pink flower bowl beautiful? Perfect for a delicate pink and white table! I got it years ago at HomeGood's for under $5.00. Great pieces don't have to be expensive!

USE NAPKINS AND NAPKIN RINGS ON TOP OF DISHES

If you have pretty napkins and napkin rings use them on the top of dish stacks!

I made these sassy flower napkin rings out of old book pages for our book club dinner.

STACK MORE THAN DISHES

Stack bowls and dessert plates and forks... or even cups.

Experiment! They make such great stacks too!

I stacked my favorite cabbage leaf tea cups and topped them off with hydrangeas and tea bags.

Stacking dishes may be an art... but it is an easy art to master!

  4. I showed this post to my hubby (he affectionately calls me "dish crazy") I adore dishes! Vintage, antique, new, floral, solid, gold or silver and preferably all mixed together. I love the reminder of days when families "dined" together and I'm thankful ours does almost every night. Now I have some new inspiration...off to the china (hoard) cabinet!

  8. Such lovely displays of your dishes! I remember my family using "Fire King" dishes when I was growing up and recently was given a variety of them that my mother-in-law found. I had no place to store them at the time and decided to just display them on the counter, thanks to seeing a recent post of yours. I must say, it brings me so much delight and memories at the dinner table growing up with my family. Thanks so much Yyvonne for all you do and bringing inspiration to all of us!

  19. I love dishes as well & love how you arrange them.

Forgive my ignorance though, so is stacking dishes/tables-capes for actually eating off of or just decorating? I don't mind eating off of stacked plates but prefer to have no more than two when I'm actually eating.

    1. Great question Jenny! I stack them on the table for decoration, then remove all of them before serving and use the ones from the stack I need to serve the meal! Hope this helps!

  31. Yvonne,
Your stacks of dishes are among my favorite posts in all of blogland. Since I first discovered blogging and Stone Gable in the fall of 2012, I have studied your posts and dish stacks. One of the things I notice about your beautiful table settings is your floral arrangements and the ways in which you photo dishes with just glimpses of the flowers. That is one of StoneGable's trademarks. So many beautiful things composed with such great ease that is second nature to you. Maybe I should write a book about the great bloggers and what makes them so great.

I'll never forget when I contacted you waaaay back when and asked if that's how you really set a table and if people really do use them that way. And of course, your answer was a resounding, "Yes!". Your inspiration has certainly changed the way that I set a table!
