Here is a little known fact about me... I have the the best "nose". I can smell things most people can't. It is a blessing and a curse!
This has made me obsessive about keeping my home smelling fresh! With an active dog and cat under foot it is especially important that my furniture and carpets stay fresh between shampooing.
When I found this easy-to-make and very inexpensive homemade Fabreze on Pinterest I had to try it.
And guess what.... IT WORKS!
Here's the recipe...
FAKE-0UT FABREZE
1/8 cup Downy Fabric Softener ( I used the originals scent and used a little less for my size bottle)
2 TBS baking soda
hot water
large spray bottle
Put all the ingredients in a spray bottle and give it a good shake until the baking soda dissolves.
Shake before using.
Shake before using.
Use as you would original Fabreze.
Easy-Fabrezey!

Some SG Notes:
Go easy~ just like the original... a little goes a long way
I have been using it for awhile now and love it!

About residue~ I've used Fabreze for years and have never had a problem. I do have my furniture and carpets cleaned regularly.
HOWEVER, I am not spraying it on my white furniture!
As all things, you might want to test it to decide for yourself.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE RECIPE FOR FREBREEZE. WHEN WE GET PEDICURES THEY USE HOT TOWELS ON YOUR LEGS AND THEY SMELL JUST LIKE DOWNY. SUCH A GREAT SMELL.

Thank you so much for the tip! Where did you buy the green spray bottle?
ReplyDeleteSorry, I've had it so long that I can't remember. But try Target or WalMart.
DeleteHope this helps!
Thank you so much for your reply. Your home is beautiful and I enjoy reading your blog daily

I'm excited to try this! Living in a house full of men with a dog...well, need I say more?!xo, Kimberly
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I'm really wanting to try your homemade laundry soap too.
ReplyDeleteHi Yvonne, Love your blog! This recipe has me a little worried though--I learned the hard way that fabric softener can produce stains on fabric that are difficult/impossible to remove...
ReplyDeleteRead the SG Notes? I asked everyone to test it. Thanks for your concern.
DeleteI have been using this recipe for some time. NO stains to report. We have a chocolate lab, a BIG boy and needed to fresh things up in between shampooing.
ReplyDeleteI also use your home made laundry soap Yvonne. Works like a charm... great for very sensitive skin too I might add.
Hugs, Gee
Interesting - I can't imagine the baking soda wouldn't eventually leave some kind of residue though. Hmmmm..
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this! I love Downy so I bet is smells GREAT!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Cindy
Interesting. I often wonder about the residue of all that stuff we spray. I guess we just don't think about it when we're not preparing it ourselves.
ReplyDeleteAs always, you do such an amazing job of staging it! A simple plastic spray bottle is transformed at the touch of your hands.

I've considered trying this since a bottle of Febreze is $5! Thanks for letting us know it really works!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the smell of Downey! With two dogs that love to sleep on my chairs, this sounds fantastic. It has to be better than all of the ingredients you find in aerosol sprays. Thanks, Yvonne!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
I am always looking for ways to make my home smell more inviting. With a house full of boys, well, sometimes that is a challenge! HA! Thanks for the tip. Can't wait to try it out.
ReplyDeleteI've thought about making this before, thank you for sharing. I just need to pick up some liquid softener next time I'm at the store.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool idea! I HATE Febreze! This could be just what I've been looking for.....and by the way, I have the same nose! It can be a curse!
ReplyDeleteYvonne,
ReplyDeleteSounds fantastic!!!
Glad you mentioned the fact about testing for residue.
Have a fresh as Spring air kinda' day, dear friend!!!
Fondly,
Pat
Such a great tip! And, even prettier picture! Looks like a beautiful table top in your house! Life to the full! Melissa
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in college in the early 1980s, I worked in a Levi's store. The recipe we gave people to break in and fade their unwashed jeans was to add a cup or two or Downey to the wash, not bleach. Have you ever spilled Downey onto dark clothing and had it bleach a spot? I have. Be careful with your mixture. Since you are going lightly with the spray, you should be fine. It's the folks that think that more is better that I'd worry about.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea-thank you.
ReplyDeleteI have the same ability! I can smell a dog or cat as soon as I walk into a home. We don't have pets, so we are very attuned to it.
ReplyDeleteI have a realtor friend who said non pet owners ask to only see pet free homes. The odor actually can get into the wood floors. I don't know, but we bought a home where a cat had been a pet. Even after having the rugs professionally cleaned, the spot where the cat sat smelled when the sun shone on it. We had to have the wool carpets ripped out.
Hope the formula helps those with the pet odor problem! Such a stinky subject, lol!
Thanks Yvonne, I definitely appreciate this because I am so sensitive/allergic to scented products. I have to be so careful with any kind of scent and laundry products are the worst. Can't wait to try this, thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteJenna
I made this and use it too!!! So much less expensive! XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteThanks Yvonne!
ReplyDeleteI saw this on Pinterest and didn't know if it worked! I will have to try it!
Blessings My Friend,
Thanks so much for the febreze recipe. I am going to have to try this.

This sounds like something even I am capable of doing. One question: I want to use it on our bedding between changes, but we have a 6 lb dog who sleeps under the covers all night. Will this harm him?? Thank you for providing new and economical ideas.
