Simmering Christmas Potpourri

Christmas at StoneGable smells like oranges and cinnamon and cloves and star anise and vanilla! It really does.

Clementines and other citrus fruits are very popular this time of year.  Save the peels and throw them into a small pot with other ingredients to make a fabulous, natural and Christmas smelling simmering potpourri.

I have done this for years and years. The aroma fills my home with a heavenly scent that my family associates with Christmas.

StoneGable Simmering Christmas Potpourri
peels of clementines, tangerines or other thin skinned oranges
star anise
cinnamon sticks
whole cloves
vanilla bean

As you eat clementines (our favorite) save the peels in a pretty bowl.

To make Christmas Potpourri
Add 1-2 clementine peels,  4-5 star anise, a small palm full of cloves, 2 cinnamon sticks and a 1/4 inch of vanilla bean snipped into several pieces to a small pot. Fill the pot 2/3 full of fresh water.
Put on the stove and SIMMER. I set a  timer on the stove so I don't forget to turn off the flame.
As the water evaporates and the better-than-baking smell wafts through the house refill with fresh water. DO NOT LET ALL THE WATER EVAPORATE.

Do not leave the pot unattended. When you are done with the potpourri for the day, let the pot sit until it is room temperature and  put the pot in the refrigerator. OR transfer the contents of the pot in a glass jar and save in the refrigerator.I use mine for a week. If the clementines get mushy, fish them out and add new.

This makes a lovely little gift.

Tear the clementines into small pieces and dry them on a flat surface. When they are dry, layer the rest of the ingredients in a small glass jar and tie a pretty ribbon around it. Add  handwritten instructions.

Get creative, look in your pantry or other fun aromatic elements to use.

Suggestions:
*lemon peels
*lime peels
* nutmeg
*all spice
*ginger

  14. Yvonne, I have SO missed your beautiful blog. I have been laid up with a kidney stone for several days now (spent one day in the ER), and am so loopy and groggy from the meds that I haven't been on the computer much. Just thought I'd take a short stroll through blogville tonight.

Your potpourri looks as beautiful as, I'm sure, it smells. I am a huge lover of filling my home with scent. I would love to make your potpourri.

I have a question, though...where do you find vanilla beans? I have never seen them in my grocery store. And what about star anise?

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

    Blessings,
    Patti

  18. Hello Yvonne~this is very similar to the MS mulling sachets I'm making to gift with bottles of cider.

I'm finally getting around to decking the halls of my home.
we'll be cutting our Christmas tree from the backyard this weekend when my college boy is home. That's sure way to get us in a festive mood.
Do you like playing Christmas music while decorating? For me the music brings a wonderful scent of the season to the air, as does the aromas of baking.

It's good to be back, I hope you get a chance to stop by for a visit.

    Sweet wishes,
    Sara

  20. Beautiful and the aroma must be divine! What a great idea for little gifts to have awaiting guests. I have everything I need to make a few jars except for the vanilla bean. A grocery store run is in order--right after the snow gets shoveled.

    Keep creating--I'll be watching!

    Best,
    Bnnie

  21. I have made this for years and just love it. I have found that using a small crock pot (slow cooker) works the best. I turn it off in plenty of time to cool down before I go to bed then stick the insert in the refrigerator. Next day just pop it back in. Works perfectly.

  22. Nice idea ... I prefer potpourri simmering right on the stove rather other ways to use it. Our clementines seem to be extra delicious this year! Have a great weekend.
