Paperwhites remind me of Christmas. They are elegant and snowy white and organic and have a heady sweet smell.
They mix wonderfully with evergreen branches and twinkling lights. They look stately grouped with Poinsettias and can be a resplendent flurry-of-white when grouped together.
Paperwhites make lovely and thoughtful living gifts that will give the recipient a season of pleasure and blooms! It's especially fun to give a single bulb in a ball jar! Given at Christmas, these flowers will bloom in January and February... just when we all need a little something blooming in our lives!
I planted my paperwhites on my back porch potting bench.
Materials:
paperwhite bulbs
gravel, small stones, or glass pebbles
wide mouth half pint ball jars
screw on lids for ball jars
Fill ball jar 3/4 full of small stones.
Paperwhites do not need soil. They just need the stones to support their roots and to help hold them upright.
Place the paperwhite bulb on top of the stones with the tip up.
Screw on the jar lid
Add a bow or twine...
Add a tag with instructions...
Paperwhites will bloom in about 6 weeks... just in time to enjoy for the Christmas season!
So easy and so beautiful....thanks for sharing...I'll have to try this!

ReplyDeleteThat's an awesome idea! I need to get some bulbs. I grew some a couple of years ago and enjoyed them. I like the stone idea because I could see the roots too much in my jar and I didn't care for it. Love the accent with the ribbon and pine branch! Great idea!
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice idea, love that they are so easy to grow and will grow in anything you put them in.

ReplyDeleteYvonne I love this gift idea! It's so funny, because I just made a little video of how to plant paperwhites for a Christmas tablescape (I haven't published it yet). Good minds think a like. Have a beautiful week.

ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
Do you need to clean the stones before using, or are they purchased stones that are already cleaned?
ReplyDeleteI purchased stones, but any old stones will do. I might rinse them before I use them.
DeleteHope this helps!
I love paperwhites and this idea for gift giving is perfect. They look so pretty in the jars. Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteYou always come up with the most beautiful ideas, Yvonne! I must give paperwhites another try - the last time they smelled so strong I had to throw them out but I do love how they look and your ideas for how to place them.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I always start some paperwhites to have for Christmas. I love their smell - I know some people don't but I do.
ReplyDeleteYvonne you and I are on the same page. PaperWhites that is!!! I posted on how to plant last week. Too funny!!

Very nice-A great gift that folks will enjoy watching grow! Don't forget to stick the bulb(s) in the ground once spent (I've planted them in the spring but they should really be stored until fall), I've had success with them growing the next spring.
ReplyDeleteOh, I love paperwhites, too! They smell so good. The idea of using a glass jar is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I host an annual Christmas dinner party for our friends each year. This year will be our 11th. Each year I try to give each couple something special to take home as a party gift. I think I just found this years gift. These are so lovely. You inspired me today, for this I say thank you from the bottom of my heart! Love Patty
ReplyDeleteYvonne~ What wonderful little hostess or teacher gifts! I love them presented in mason jars and tied with your ribbon :)
ReplyDeleteYvonne, this is so pretty. I love the idea of the mason jars.

ReplyDeleteYvonne, I love the paperwhites in the mason jars; I planted some for the holidays in shells but love this compact little gift idea....
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely way to give paperwhites as gifts. I included at the party today how I plant paperwhites for use indoors in our home over the holidays. I use a larger container and more bulbs, but you are right--they are very easy to grow, and bloom just at a time of year when I start to miss my flowers out in the garden!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! I think I will give these as gifts to the ladies in our small group that meets in our home on Sunday nights. When is the best time to make them to give out right before Christmas?
ReplyDeleteYvonne, Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful project. My husband and I garden and collect paperwhites every year to give to friends. I love the way you displayed them in the jelly jars. So cute and the ribbon, love it!
ReplyDeleteJody

ReplyDeleteYvonne, I just finished making the jars with the Paperwhite bulbs. I'm taking the jars to friends tomorrow. I had so much fun making them. Love all your creativity! Thank you for sharing with all of us. Love this season of giving!!
ReplyDeleteI made these at the beginning of November, and am happy to have a few blooms today! This makes such a cute gift.
ReplyDeleteWell, now I know what I'm going to do in the next couple of days -- prep some paper whites for Valentine's Day! Thanks for the instructions -- love the Mason jar idea. They're cute and portable!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't the water get smelly or slimy?
ReplyDeleteI've not had that happen. But if it does, just dump it out and add fresh water. Hope this helps
DeleteWow! I'm semi-retired from teaching, but now I "sub." I was looking for an idea to give to all the teachers for whom I have subbed this year. This is a GREAT idea! It's simple and I don't have to worry if it's something they like to eat! Yea!!!! This idea made my day!!!!!
