SOUP TUREEN LIDS ON THE WALL

I'm sure in YOUR time you think this whole dining room total make over thing is taking forever... but in my time... well, it is too!

But I am so close to being totally done with the dining room... and finding and adding the soup tureen lids to the dining room wall is one of the finishing touches!

I'm so excited to show you...

I first saw soup tureen lids at Luckett's (click HERE to learn more) over a year ago and was smitten! I did not buy any then because I didn't have a clear vision for my dining room walls.

Once I knew that I would layer shutters and soup tureen lids on either side of the mirror, I started my hunt. I must have hunted for 6 months and only had 3 soup tureen lids to show for it. I even called Luckett's and they were all sold out!

Then on a spur-of-the-moment shopping trip to Luckett's a couple of week's ago  I found 6 soup tureen lids on sale! I scooped them right up! What a big score!

They are creamy white and have beautiful fine lines of crazing.

I love crazing especially on white dishes, don't you?

First came the mirror...

And it sorta looked a little lost on the wall...

Then the shutters were added...

And now the soup tureen lids finished the wall off...

They fill out the large space without being too loud and distracting.

This room is really a mix of high end pieces and very low brow ones! I love to mix the elegant and refined with the chippy and rustic.  It makes a formal room a lot less stuffy... and much more welcoming and livable!

It feels comfortable to me.

I want to thank all my wonderful, loyal, truthful, fabulous readers for giving me tons and tons and hundreds of fresh and creative ways to fill the chippy frames in the dining room.

I will spend the weekend working on that project and show you how you inspired me... stop back and see next week!

You are really the best!

XO

  2. So wow, soup tureen lids? Who knew? I LOVE the look. Are they sold alone, or with the tureen? Also -- it looks like you were able to find pairs so that one side is identical to the other. True? I think this is such a creative idea. They add such visual interest to the room. Fabulous idea!!! Can't wait to see what you put in the chippy frames! Have a great day Yvonne!!!! ~Sally

    1. Sally, great questions! Most soup tureen lids are not sold separate. I just could not bring myself to only use the lids of a whole set! Luckett's sell them separate... and yes, one side is identical to the other.

  4. Hi Yvonne, I have a friend who has lots of turine lids on the wall in her kitchen. They are mainly blue and white and they look great.
I love the look you have created with them as well.

  5. It looks terrific! And you've inspired me as the same wall in my dining room needs some help too. I've painted the sideboard (not unlike your's) and have a gold mirror over it. The wall also has two windows, one on either side of the sideboard. But it needs something else to tie it all together. Maybe the lids idea is the way to go. I'll have to keep my eye out the next time I'm shopping. Thanks for the inspiration (as always).

    1. Hi Diane. I use a fabulous plate hanger called THE DISC. They stick on to the back of the plates, or in this case, a soup tureen lid and have their own little hanger. I love them! Here is a link for them http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_13?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=the%20disc%20plate%20hanger&sprefix=THE+DISC+PLAT%2Caps%2C147&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Athe%20disc%20plate%20hanger

  12. LOVE your soup tureens lids!!! They are just beautiful and finish off the wall perfectly. I too like dishes that have crazing. It speaks of long life and history and very much adds to their beauty. Do you think wrinkles do that for us? Maybe I should try to start thinking of them that way.

  21. Oh how I wish I could have a kitchen, dining room, living area, stairway... okay your house, but alas, mine is covered in missing library books, cords for a myriad of ipads, ipods and computers and papers, school work that needs sorted and organized, finished? and then of course the toys, I am luck to be able to sit in my chair at the table without needing to move at least something from my seat, every mealtime I think to myself "this just means we have kids and they live here". If I ever have the opportunity I will be getting a home with a playroom/schoolroom/kids-area so that the rest of my house can bring me the peace that your home does!

  22. i'd like to say great minds think alike but since i have only one lid i guess i can't claim that greatness with you! all kidding aside, they look wonderful. i've had a lid for years and always wanted more but like you said, they usually aren't sold separately. right now my one lone lid is being used with a large platter on a large plate stand (doesn't make a lot of sense but it looks good).

i know i've mentioned this several times before, but i still don't get your newsletter and i have signed up for it numerous times....bummer!

  26. Your beautiful dining room is questioning my love for the paper that dresses my dining room. I do love it and I'm not ready to part and paint. But if I was to be so lucky to find such gorgeous lids, I would hang them on my wall exactly like yours.

  27. Yvonne I remember seeing soup tureen lids on someones blog quite awhile ago and thinking how clever. I told my Mom about it. It would be perfect in her little cottage. I must say I am in LOVE with how you have them on your wall, love the shapes and the different designs, perfect!! Great addition to a lovely room.

  30. I bought a porcelain chamber pot and its lid looks just like the middle lid of the soup tureen you hung up.
Could be that some of them are chamber pot lids. Ha! Looks really nice.

    1. Ugh, you crushed my plans. Now that I think about it, most tureen lids would have the opening for the ladle. So, although lids without the openings look nicer for walls, I would now worry that what I would be getting is for a chamber pot. :(

  31. Beautiful! Your finishing touches are just making this room so pretty! I have a gorgeous soup tureen lid just waiting to be hung. The trouble is, it has a soft green transferware on it-so pretty, but not really on par with the rest of my room. It was a gift, and is so old and pretty, so I'm determined to find a way to make it work :)

  32. Love this look with the soup tureen lids on the wall. Can I ask how you hung them? I have a few that I bought as a set, but the tureens are all chipped and crazed(which I love too) while the lids are in perfect condition...I guess because they didn't get used as much. They don't look very good together that way and I've wanted to hang the lids somewhere, but not sure how.

    Thanks for your time:-)

Looking back over your pictures of the room really drove home how important layering is. The room was always pretty and now it truly looks complete. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the frames.
