PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE!!!!!!

Do you make pro/con lists? I do, at least in my head.

A pro/con list can really help pinpoint and direct me to the right decision. I have a pretty strong emotional side that can happily and exuberantly lead me down one path without much thought!

This month we are making a few changes to the family room. New hardwood floors and a new chair.

I would love your input with the chair decision...

The whole chair thing started when we drug up a wing back recliner from the basement while I was recovering from knee surgery. The chair is hideous... what was I thinking 15 years ago...

Anyway... it sure is comfortable! I can put my feet up or lean far back and shut my eyes! But again, it is  the ugliest chair that is not sitting on a front porch somewhere with a big sloppy dog in it!  It's THAT ugly!

Bobby started gently suggesting that I might want to buy another recliner. He said it would be good for my knees and back. He reminded me that I really enjoy sitting in the eye-sore-of-a-recliner. Giving him a sideways glance, I said no! I will not have a recliner in my family room (even thought I was sitting quite comfortably in the butt-ugly chair)!

Then he started to leave the Lay-z-boy site up on my computer with note that had some recliner suggestions.

This week Bobby asked me if I would like to go on a little drive and have an early dinner with him. He did not tell me the little drive was to the Lay-z-boy store.  And so I unknowingly went along!

Once inside the Lay-z-boy store (after sitting in the car for awhile so the shock of deception wore off a little) I did find some wonderful recliners... that did not look like recliners at all!

And I did find "the one". It looks like a club chair, but it acts like a recliner!

It was not too big, or too small, or too hideous... but it was... just right!

Actually, I think it is a gorgeous, well made chair!

The SPINDALE HIGH LEG RECLINER will fit perfectly right...

And another look....

And one more look...

Now here's where you come in...

I have decided on a fabric... but not on the color.

Because this is going to be an investment piece, it will live with us for a long long time.

I would like your opinion... your honest opinion.

Here is choice 1...
(and yes, it's a recliner... who knew!)

On the pro list this fabric is...
*fun
*bold
*sassy
* I love love love houndstooth
*works well with my kitchen and breakfast room that can be seen from the family room
* it's the only print in my family room
* it might bring life and pizzazz to my room (with the right accessories)
*black and white... sigh!
*very in style right now
* I can get black legs
* I can get new accessories!
*I ADORE it... for now!

On the con list...
* it is very bold
* I might get tired of it in a few years
* it's the only print in the room
* do you think I'll get tired of it?
*it might overwhelm the rest of the room
*I can't take it back!!!!!!!

Here's choice 2

Pro list...
(it actually is a warmer tan than shown in this picture)
*classy
* I love love love houndstooth
* upscale take on a classic
*beautiful color
*goes with everything
* it's the only print in my family room
*I probably will never get tired of it
* I can add any color to my family room with this chair
*I really, really like it

Con list...
*I might regret not getting the black and white chair
*I can use this chair in almost any room in my house
*this is the safe choice... and that's not a bad thing. This may need to be both a pro and con.

I just can't make up my mind!

HELP!

I would love to hear what you think... PLEASE!

    1. I think the tan and white is the best choice for that room. I'm not much for a chair, that you may want to have for years to come, to be a statement piece. Been there...done that and was so sorry later.

    2. I absolutely “love” this chair! The soft color makes the chair look comfortable and yet the hound’s-tooth speaks of who you are, you are someone who is not afraid to step out of the box, I say, if you love it, go with it, if you should get tired of it, you will find something very interesting to do with it, the reason being is “ you are very creative”.

  2. I love the tan chair best for your family room. I think in time the black and white that you may tire of and want to move to another room. Yvonne I have the same recliner in a print and I do love it and you won't regret buying it but I chose a fabric to fit in with my family room. Now we are downsizing to a condo with no family room and given the amount of money we paid for it I am forced to use it and it gives me much grief as it doesn't fit in with my decor for the new condo. I think I am going to move it to a bedroom. I wish I had chosen the taupe fabric that yours is in. Also while the black and white one is lovely, do you want it to be the first thing people notice when they walk into your family room as the contrast is quite great. Well there you go, my honest opinion.

  3. I like #2 ....not so "in your face". I love black and white, don't misunderstand.....but I think the lighter tones would look lovely with your other "warm" colors. You can always add black and/or white with pillows and a throw. Whatever you choose.....your home will look and feel comfy and cozy!

  4. I did not mean to be "anonymous" lol and I still like #2 !

  5. Wow! This is tough. If I were crazy about herringbone and I wanted it on a chair I would get a smaller scale print. If not get a solid color chair and put wild herringbone pillows on it. Here is where I can put my experience -- I have a wonderful couch bought many years ago. The fabric is still in great shape but by today's standard it is very dated. I am going to cover the pillows in a plain/neutral fabric and then go colorful with accent pillows. But that is my taste. It is so individual. If you love it -- get it. And if you get tired of it the bones of the piece are still good and you can get a slipcover for it. I don't think I've helped you much :-(

  6. The black and white color is bold and combined with the herringbone pattern would draw all of the attention in your room to the chair...I'd stay with the neutral color palette and let the print speak for itself.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Go with the taupe. It blends more with the colors in your room. Although black goes with anything, I think it would be too harsh with the herringbone fabric. Good luck with your decision!

  8. Wow - this is a tough call, Yvonne! I love both of them and don't know that I can recommend one over the other, but will add one more thought. The large houndstooth print is VERY eye-catching (in a good way!) and will be even more so in a black/white version instead of the more subdued tan/cream version. Not that that's a bad thing - just one more thing to think about. I struggle so when it comes to decisions like this. On the one hand, I'm afraid that I'll tire of an expensive piece that may be too trendy. On the other hand, I want to be brave and go with what I love! I'm lots of help, aren't I? lol Good luck with your decision!

  9. Yvonne, I have not idea! :) YOU are my "go to" gal for decorating advice! I always love what you do, so I can't wait to see what you choose! Whatever your choice,I know it will be lovely. Thanks for continuing to inspire me with your wonderful blog.

  10. Okay her goes with my comment...love black and white myself (have buffalo check black and cream curtains)...but when I look at your room the more muted tone would fit better. I got this great graphic black and white print fabric and put them on my kitchen stools...but realized that all my colors are muted and so it was a small but valuable lesson.

  11. Definitely the Tan you have a large investment in Leather Chairs and the Tan tho Bold will coordinate with the Leather. Then only work Color in with accessories.Used to design at Lazy Boy and would show fabric swatches by Leather piece to show.Maybe that would ease your mind.Furniture is a Big investment so to choose SAFE is to choose Wisely So glad you are up and about you are still in my prayers.Be Blessed.

  12. Okay...
I'm with you. The black is so striking, and you may not get tired of it over the long run. It is a beautiful chair.
However, when it comes to accessorizing, you might be more limited with black.
Case in point, pillows, and throws (we all know you love pillows).
The tan colored chair would be much more versatile (i.e. the beautiful blue accents in the room now , like the blue patterned pillow, may not be very eye-catching next to the black).
I think you should go tan....you will be happier I think in the long run...it is a beautiful chair....

  13. With the brown leather chairs in the family room I would go the "safe" route w/the neutral houndstooth fabric! If you decide to use black in the room you could pull it in with accessories or a pillow with the black/brown/blue in it. LOVE the chair and fabric you've chosen!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Since either chair will "go," maybe look at the big picture and what feeling you want to evoke. Black and white is more dramatic and you love it. When you accessorize the room, you can make it work. Look at your past pictures and see if it would have limited you in any way. The camel is more blended and will feel warm and require no special thought when you accessorize. I think it's a matter of what you are up for since either will be lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would go for the tan chair if it were me. I love more neutral colors that I never seem to tire of. To me it would look lovely in your family room with what you have and the new hardwood floors.

  17. Go bold - go black & white! Classic Chanel! Looking around the room, I think it's not only what you want, it's what you need. It'll tie all the black & brown together nicely. I love black accents in a room. Btw, the fabric on the chair looks a bit grey-ish in the photo, hopefully it's true b&w. No room for grey area here.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am in love with your family room Yvonne! The herringbone pattern is so pretty and would look beautiful in your room. As much I love the black and white, my vote is for the tan because I think it would tie in better with your room. I love how the blue pops in your room as your accent color and the black pattern might distract from that. If you wanted to add more black and white to the room maybe try adding a pillow or two or a few more accessories. These are easier to change and less expensive than the big investment of furniture. You mentioned the tan would also work in other rooms and that's a big plus too! Either way your room will look amazing : )

  22. Love the houndstooth print Yvonne! I vote tan, you still get the dramatic size of the print but it's more subtle and you can change pillows and add colorful throws to it more easily :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would go with the tan. You could consider black piping or maybe a pillow of the black herringbone. Yvonne, all of your rooms are lovely, but what attracts me to them is how each element of the decor compliments the other. No one piece jumps in my face and distracts me from from the combined beauty.

I think you could also make that happen with the black herringbone chair by adding enough black. But, given this is an investment piece, will you always be happy with those parameters?

    1. Yvonne, I am in between workmen and taking a quick break to vote. I agree with what Beverly said here. So I vote tan. I have some taupe and cream large print herringbone that I purchased years ago and still like it. I like the black and white, too, but probably more as an accent. And you could use black over there since you have black on the other wall with the black shutters.

Off to manage workmen. The pressure washers just left! I am ready to go back to bed!

  24. you asked for honesty.....I prefer the tan by far but still think its really bold and not sure if you might tire of it. I have found it safe to go with neutrals and maybe jazz it up with fun bold pillows or even a throw, just my 2 cents. The first one is really dramatic and I feel might be the first thing the eye travels to when you walk in the room. I also feel with all the warm browns/tans in the room, the black will be too outstanding, the tan to me is the way to go:) Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I must admit that your fabric choices were really surprising! With that said, I would pick the warmer tan. It coordinates better with your leather furniture and the wood accents in the room. Maybe a simple yet colorful accent pillow or throw on your new chair can coordinate with other pillows or throws in the room (or play off of them). Even similar color very near the new chair would be nice. A quiet place for both eyes and body to rest is so nice.

  26. Be really sure of the print you have chosen, sometimes large prints can be hard to live with. I love the hounds tooth print but I am not sure it goes with your style. Sorry and Good Luck with your decision.

  27. Black! Tan is boring. The black will anchor that side of the room.

    ReplyDelete
  28. love the tan. it just fits. The black becomes the focal point.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I am not sure either would go in your room as well as you want it to but LazyBoy brought a chair and lots of samples for me to my house when I bought a couple of chairs (free of charge) to see what it would look like in my house. I picked something completely different than what I would have chosen in the store and they are gorgeous! And this reminds me that is is exactly the "recliner/chair" I need now, so I guess I will be heading to LazyBoy again.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think you can't go wrong, both are great options! But my personal preference is the tan one since you can use it anywhere in your home. But I usually go safe, so you won't hurt my feelings if you pick the black...it will pop in your family room and make a statement, pulling all the other bits of black out. Tough decision!

  31. Oh by the I choose the tan. Thanks

  32. Hi Yvonne,
Congrats on that wonderful surprise drive. I'd live a surprise drive anyday! Lol,. Ok, THE chair?.. Hmm,. I love the 1st choice BUT... Of course I think some of these new colors schemes are possibly fad,. I would go with the traditional colors and actually both match beautifully bc you have incorporated both colors and mixed and matched very well!. Your a master at that, a natural.! But gosh I'm awful on decisions, I have to get opinions of friends too. But I'm just looking at the practical side of it and thinking the beigey #2 choice would be it.
Good luck to ya,. Can't wait to see what the lucky chair will be!! Do share!!

  36. Hi Yvonne, Love the style of this chair and both colors are beautiful. At first I thought you should stick with the tan but the more I think about it the black would be stand out. You can always tone it down a bit with your beautiful pillows or a throw. It will also play with the black accents you have in your kitchen and on your bookshelves. It's such a classic chair that you can't go wrong with either color.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i hate both of them. you like it now but a week or month or year from new will you still like it? the answer is probably not. i would find the fabric and make pillows with it. i do not think going with a soild color is a bad or safe thing it is practical because you will have it for a long time. the BIG thing is you will have the chair for a long time and going bold on it is not wise if it was a pillow no problem. i think because you asked us what we think you do not beleve i you choice.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like option #2 the tan chair since the room has those tan, brown and beige tones already. You can always add a black throw to it to jazz it up a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi Yvonne-
I love the tan - it will go so beautifully in your family room -
You can make it pop with beautiful pillows, because it so neutral -( one for every season)...Love the pillows in Pottery Barn.
Also if you need more advice because you are still not sure go to houzz.com and put the black & white chair along with family room in the search button and see how other people show it in their rooms.
    Good Luck.

  40. The chair is GREAT. I would never have guessed it was a recliner. But I think the black & white is going to overpower your room. It's not like it is a lightweight ladder back chair with a rush seat. It is a CHAIR. Go with the tan. You won't regret it. Bring out some black in accessories if you want. I always feel the big pieces in a room should be neutral and the accessories the star. That way you can change your direction whenever you want.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Houndstooth is classic, but then again I am an Alabama fan….Roll Tide! I vote for number one. It would look better with the bold accessories you favor. GREAT choice! :D

Also the first one would compliment the shutters on your mantel.

I think the bold pattern will be fun in your room because you don't have a bold pattern other than your curtains. I think number one would look best with your curtains, too.

    Great choice!!!

  42. After reading all the comments I went back to the pictures of the different angles of the room. You have black accessories: fireplace, shutters above, TV, wood in chair opposite of where this one will sit, and it looks like you have a couple to a few frames with black trim. I vote BLACK. It will bring a pop of energy to the room and you can throw a blue solid blanket over the back of the chair (kattywampus) that will blend with the other blues throughout the room.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I choose #2 the color blends better with your room! I may put a blue or yellow pillow on it!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Tan! It's neutral and blends with your family room decor. You can go bold with pillows, throws and accessories. It's a chair that will last at least a decade, so make sure it will work for you, not that you have to work to disguise once the trend is over. Pick the one that will not end up as the next "butt ugly" chair in the basement!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Your designs are always lovely, so I'm confident you will make it amazing. LazyBoy "recliners" have come so far...I made the choice some years ago too...one of my considerations was that I could always have it recovered if I really became tired of the pattern I chose...so go with your heart.
I personally would choose the tan option because I feel the pattern is bold in its own right...but that is just me.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I would cut down on the accessories. Way too many for my taste and otherwise leave the room as it is. The fabric of the drapes with black and white would clash. The room looks very inviting.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love the tan, I don't think you'll over get tired of it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I vote for the black and white. The tones seem to go better with what you already have. The tan seems "too warm" for the space, however with that said I absolutely love all that you do and it will look wonderful no matter what. Can't wait to see the final result!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Go with the camel, just make sure it's in the same color family as the drapes. The softer look is easier to live with and lends itself to bolder choices for accessories which can be changed out on a whim.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yvonne it would be ideal if you could get a one yard sample of the fabrics. Then throw them over another chair in that space and just live with them for a few days.
The black will obviously command attention and I am afraid it would take away from your blue and white fabrics. All that said my choice would be the tan. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Just because you love a fabric doesn't mean it will go well in your home. Tan - if you really want the hounds tooth. You're going to end up re-styling your entire room around that chair. Sorry, just my opinion. Like others, I would opt for black accents.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I love this Cover Details:Cover Type:Cover Color:Granite (F111154)Cover Pattern:Marceau (F111154). a nice neutral, not too bold

    ReplyDelete
  53. I always love what you do!!! Follow your instincts. With that said....here is a short story. Last year on a whim I bought 2 zebra chairs that I loved dearly. I used them for accent next to an antique white cabinet. It looked great. This year we decided to paint several rooms and get some new rugs and this was my chance to do some color changes that I had wanted to do for a long time. Well, the zebra chairs no longer fit in with the new rugs and colors I have chosen. I'm going to wind up having them recovered at some point and that is costly.
Can't wait to see which one you choose. I'm sure it will be gorgeous.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yvonne, my opinion for what it is worth is to choose another fabric. The check is so bold that it will be difficult to decorate around it and will soon be so tiring to your eyes. Because your entire house is tan and black perhaps you could add a fabric with some color to off set the same ole same ole. Good luck with making your decision!

  56. I prefer the tan, and agree with others to use the black in accessories

    ReplyDelete
  57. Tan, too! Go wild with throws & pillows [easy to change when bored]......but then, if you can afford it, Go for the bold and then cover it with neutral pillows and throws when it tires! haha

    ReplyDelete
  58. Choosing the black one will mean you will want to change curtains for starters I think. I agree with the reader who suggested getting samples brought to your home. The houndstooth pattern is a classic, but does it not come in a smaller print? I think the large print will overwhelm the room.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Can you bring home some fabric swatches? That might help you visualize the color choices better. By hanging the swatches over a chair maybe that will help with the decision? Its hard to choose but you don't want to go to trendy and regret your decision in a year or so. Good quality furniture is way to costly to make the wrong choice. You will pick the perfect piece, you always do! Go with your gut, its never wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hi,
I think a paisley in grey and white would work better. The hounds-tooth could be used in a pillow. being that you want it to withstand a good number of years without going out of style. Hope you're sittin' pretty soon!
I am SURE whatever you decide it will be wonderful! You have AWESOME taste!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I absolutely prefer choice 2, the tan chair. Looking forward to seeing your chair of choice in the room. :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think the large scale pattern is too different from the other upholstery fabrics. I would suggest another solid--have you considered velvet? Maybe in a navy blue? To me velvet adds a sumptuous feel without being too formal. Or if you really want a pattern I think a smaller scale would work better. If you love the houndstooth I would choose the tan--the white seems too white in the picture. And I agree that it would help if you can get a large sample to live with in the room for a few days. Good luck! You are quite talented, creative
    and inspiring!

  63. Been there, done that....get a solid color with a fantastic texture, a scrumptious feeling fabric and add pattern with pillows or throw. Texture will never go out of style but, a large print usually does.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I would go tan...pillows will always add the pops of color you are looking for, not to mention I don't think you will tire of it. My first thought was the black because I LOVE statement pieces, however as you mentioned the chair will be with you for a long time, again better to go safe-and I know it will look lovely in your room with the right pillows or flashy throw.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love the chair and my fabric choice is, choice number 1! The black and white houndstooth with black legs. It's an updated, timless classic!!! It will be also be a welcome pop to the room that will still allow you to add color if desired. You know every good room needs something black. Good luck with your decision making. Bobby is a smart man, deceptive, but smart!!! Can't wait to hear your decision. Go with your gut!!!

  66. Hey Yvonne,

Wellll, I love houndstooth and I love black and white, buttttt. I think a smaller scale houndstooth would work better in the room and and I think going with the tan would be awesome. You have black and white accents which I think add a nice touch in your room, but unless you want this investment piece to be the focal point, I personally think it needs to scale back on the boldness. By using the houndstooth in a smaller scale, it still adds an interesting piece to the room and could be dressed up with a black pillow or a throw to accessorize it. Because is it an investment piece, I would go neutral. I think you would get the same effect, but I don't think it would become the "oh my gosh, what was I thinking" chair years down the road. Just my opinion. Your home is so inviting. Good luck on your decision.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Choice #2 definitely. It goes with the room so much better. I think the black and white commands too much attention and the eye will not go to the other wonderful pieces in the room.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I vote tan. That is one large print and I believe the black and white would be overpowering.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I have been picking livingroom furniture.......very difficult! I Love that Black and white houndstooth but I think that the person that said you would want to change the curtains then that just starts the ball rolling. Your room is beautiful and I think that either a smaller houndstooth or the tan houndstooth would work better with the rest of the room! But who am I to say, I got a turqiose chair to go with my grey furniture!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I love them both and agree with the majority of the comments: tan.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Number 2 definitely....love the black and white. Your room is soft and cozy...I feel like the black would be a focal point and you would not notice the rest of the room.
Also...I have found that you cannot find anyone to reupholster a recliner should you tire.
The tan and white will be perfect..

    ReplyDelete
  72. Casting my vote for the tan. Think the black/white will limit future décor choices and yes, I think you will get tired of it. I decorate with a lot of black /white, white cabinets, buffalo check etc., but not for major upholstered pieces because I will have them for a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I think that the Black & White would be great...would look great from your kitchen and can still add color ... that would make you happy happy happy....

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think the tan would fit in nicely in your family room without being overly bold. The thing I like best about your decorating is the calm color scheme. I also like to use black in my home, but I just think it would be too bold for your family room. I am sure whatever you decide will look great!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Either would work nicely.....the tan one would blend in and the black one would anchor and accent the black items in the room. Don't think you will be disappointed with either. What does Hubby like?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Definitely the tan. I LOVE houndstooth. You won't regret the chair- I bought the same one for my husband in leather last year & we love it!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Either color would be ok but I think you can live with a smaller print longer AND dress it up more easily in different ways. You already have a couple of bolder, bigger prints in your draperies and pillows. I personally like softer colors but that doesn't mean the black wouldn't fit with a smaller print.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Trust your instincts Yvonne. Your taste is always spot on. I myself choose black and white. It would play off the black accents already in room and would be beautiful. Black and white is classic and you will always be able to find a home for it when you are ready for a change. Either way, you really can't go wrong.

  79. Trust your instincts Yvonne. Your taste is always spot on. I myself choose black and white. It would play off the black accents already in room and would be beautiful. Black and white is classic and you will always be able to find a home for it when you are ready for a change. Either way, you really can't go wrong.

  80. Go with the black and white!! You can't go wrong with the "pop" it will bring to your room!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. This is a tough one Yvonne! I think the obvious choice is to say 'Tan' as it will go with absolutely everything and can be accessorized with black and white. However, having said that, I have to just say that I feel in love with the black and white accents in your kitchen - I mean LOVE. Black & White herringbone is the ultimate compliment to your personality and classic taste. Black always grounds a room, but this addition will also make it pop! Be brave - go BOLD! So you have to recover it in 10 years - big deal....

I love your family room, but it is a busy room. I myself love prints and colors, but If I would be buying a chair that I planned on keeping a looong time, I would go with the softer shade and probably a more solid color, and use accent pillows.

  83. Gotta be the tan Yvonne! You've got great, classy taste.....you'll pick the right one!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I would go with the tan houndstooth print . Easy to accentuate or downplay, you will never be able to downplay the black and white one! Personally, I like the chair you already have ! Just change the upholstery fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  85. I suggest going with the BLACK AND WHITE. It's well, classier and timeless. And what's the worst that can happen if you tire of it? Recover in the future. But the tan is blah and ordinary. You strike me as unique and classic, not at all the blah sort in your home. It's a family room and should have some fun in it.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Your room looks pretty! I would pick the tan one to blend in. The black and white would overwhelm the room. You should pick the one you love. There is no right or wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I would pick the TAN. I really think that although you love houndstooth, this print is so large and bold you'll get tired of it within a couple of years and as you said....I can't take it back. Good Luck.

    ReplyDelete
  88. While the houndstooth is very trendy, the tan tones it down. Black and white is stark and I think the tan is more of a neutral. I think it depends on how long you want to go before recovering. The tan probably would live longer in my home.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I like both however I would go with #2 chair as I think it will not overwhelm down the road. Good luck!

  90. Go for the statement piece. You are a decorator blogger. We are inspired by you because you take risks. Anyone can play it safe. Just go for it.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Tan- It makes a statement without bullying the room! Black and White would be great as a stand alone piece but does not get along with others in this case! Just my humble opinion!
Now if only I could be that decisive in my own home.

  92. Love the chair Yvonne, and both fabrics are nice but I would go with the lighter. You can always introduce more color with pillows. I usually play it safe and am usually glad I did. Either way it will be beautiful and the best thing is to have a chair that is comfortable for you to sit back and relax in!

  93. oh my goodness yvonne....this was like reading about my same delimma (sp?) last year. we needed to replace my husband's old ugly recliner and i was determined to find a club chair and ottoman but with the configuration of my den i would have to get rid of our coffee table to accomodate the ottoman (my den is huge but it still wasn't going to work). my husband insisted we were going to get a lay-z-boy recliner in leather, which i didn't want. i had my heart set on a fabric. we got to the store and i went directly to the fabric ones trying to choose the "perfect" chair. we had the most wonderful salesman and after spending probably 2-3 hours with us (no kidding) we bought a.....leather one with nailhead trim!!! it's gorgeous and i couldn't be happier! it looks like a club chair and the leather is so buttery soft (i'm sitting in it right now). i lived in it after my knee surgery last summer and now claim it as my own. i wish i could offer you some advice on which fabric to select but unfortunately i'm loving our leather one. i know you will make the right decision with your awesome taste! good luck!!

  94. You are remarkable with your decorating, so I suspect that you already know what you want in your family room. But something is making you hesitate - what is it? Maybe you feel that neither one is exactly right...I don't know, but you do! Trust yourself that you will make the right decision.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I like choice #2 personally because it's still a fun, energetic pattern but it will really work with anything you do in the future. On the other hand, if you go with the black I don't think it would be a bad choice because you can always tone it down with a throw on the back or pillows....or if you really get sick of it...a slipcover. So it's win win either way!

  96. The pattern is pretty bold-like the elephant in the room. Do they have a smaller patterned houndstooth check in tan? I think you are going to tire of this big print and wish you had chosen something that would blend in a little better after a couple of years. Debbie W. .

    ReplyDelete
  97. I love the bold idea of using black. Done right it can be a neutral. But in my opinion what prevents thst is the large scale of the houndstooth. Keep your urge for pop of colot and black but perhaps in a smaller design. I love how black can take on other colors, think accents colors for holiday/season changes. But im just not loving the large print & pop of black. I appreciate how much you are loving the great find of a useful recliner. But think long term and the many different looks you could get from it. Because you know it will be comfortable. ..Thanks for allowing us all to add our 2 cents... Barbara Ann

  98. HI Yvonne, my vote is with those who favor the taupe fabric. While I'm not afraid of going bold I think with the black/white houndstooth pattern you would then have to change much of the room. I think it would compete with your blue/white pillows, your striped lamp, and even your brown leather. While the black/white would complement your kitchen I think it would overpower your family room. I'm anxious to see what you decide. Sue

  99. Your space is lovely your color choices are pretty. My idea on current trends are to use them as accents rather than a larger piece you might tire of.You have a lot of patterns going on in the room in smaller doses which look great,I would say maybe a different fabric choice.

    ReplyDelete
  100. While I love them both, I am leaning towards the tan for that room. Even though it is safer, I think you will be able to live with it longer. Either way, you always seem to go with the right decision. Can't wait to see what you choose!

  101. Yvonne....first of all, I LOVE the chair...I have pretty much the same club chair which is a recliner in the media room...I have to tell our guests to relax and recline if they want and they are really surprised that they were actually sitting in a recliner....As far as pattern/color, I know you love black and white; however, I know without a doubt that you will make the perfect decision!!!

    ReplyDelete
  102. My vote would be the tan/cream, it just seems to fit seemlessly in the room. I noticed you have white/cream as a base for your color scheme throughout the house and the tan/cream will continue with the warm tone. The black/white reminds me of a man's suit and would just scream "look at me" like a distraction in the room.

  103. Funny thing is .... I purchased 2 of the same LaZBoy for our front room in a beautiful cream, black and gold paisley. We got rid of our oooooold LaZboy in the family room and replaced it with a beautiful oversized club chair. I hated to have no recliner in our house, since they're great when you're not feeling feeling but don't want to lie down, so we bought a pair of living room!

    ReplyDelete
  104. I forgot to add, buy the 2nd choice. It will make you happier for much longer.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I'm pretty sure, in the long run, you'd be happier with #2. I like it much better. If you ever wanted to put a pillow in the black and white one, you'd be more limited. Just a thought. Looks so comfy! :D

    ReplyDelete
  106. I think you need to ask yourself that when people (or you) look at the room do you want them to take in the whole room or just the chair! If you chose the black and white chair it would make your eye go right to that chair...... a "pop" or "assault"? It would be too much for me, because I like a room to have a sense of cohesiveness.....so if you are going a pattern so large, I would choose the lighter one. Also to me a family room is about coziness....and the bold black and white pattern would make me "nervous". To me the focal point shouldn't be one chair. Whatever you choose, I'm sure in the end you will be happy with it.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Yvonne you know that I am a total black and white loving gal, but in this room I think the tan and white is best. Since it is being placed in the room as a occasional chair it needs to blend. The black and white will look like a "WHY?" in the room. Why is it there. If you had two and used in place of the leather it would make sense to use the black but since it is one it needs to be more quiet. I do have a question about the drapes they look gold and will they be fighting with the drapes?

    ReplyDelete
  108. PS in reading your list, you have already chosen the tan and cream, if you look at it closely.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I don't know what happened to my previous comment, but I would choose the black and white. I have a recliner in my bedroom made in the exact same black and white large hounds tooth print, and I still love it after two years! A very bold, classic look! My walls are a soft green, but I'm having them repainted in SW Silver Mist.

  112. Love the houndstooth and love the tan. I don't think it will ever go out of style (houndstooth is classic) and I think you could do more with the neutral than the black, which you could tire of over the years. I know this because I used to use a lot of black and have now switched to a bit more neutrals with a splash of color - works for me. Also, if you ever need to move it to another room, it would probably go with any style. Whatever you do, you really can't go wrong, Yvonne, you have great style! (And I love your use of accessories - always very tasteful!)

  115. I love the tan and chair is small and classy---that will bring important presence to your family name picture.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Have you considered the somewhat larger herringbone pattern of the chair next to your drapes which also appear to have a fairly large pattern? Do you think they might compete with each other? Personally, I think the room could use a print, just in a smaller scale. If your heart is set on the herringbone, then I would choose the tan. Perhaps, you could place the herringbone chair where the leather chair to the left of the fireplace is right now.

  117. The black and white chair made me think hot pink surroundings.
    Gooooooooo T A N -
also a lovely texture in a solid blue chair would compliment your rooms color theme, use the black and white hounds tooth check in a throw over the arm of your new recliner. (I did not read all your comments if someone
already said this, ditto.) Good Luck on your decision, you will make it work!

  120. Yvonne, if you can find some inexpensive black and white check fabric, why don't you buy a yard or two, drape it over a chair and live with it for awhile. Better to spend a few dollars making your decision than not and regret it later.

  121. I have 2 lazy-boy recliners made just like that which are in my sun room so husband and I can watch the wildlife. I had them recovered in a creamy white mattelasse several years ago (it does not fade badly in the sun and I add color with pillows and accessories). I don't like furniture with cranks on the side but love my push back recliners. I even have one in the living room that looks like a reproduction Stickley arts and crafts chair. You can find attractive recliners if you look long enough. They have really helped with my knee problems this last year.

  122. If these were the only two selections, I would have to go with the black and white. All the colors you can put with it, its so clean looking. The tan look is boring, like it will just fade into the background. What about a print or something with texture, even a nice solid with a print pillow or colorul throw.
I've only read a few opinions, looks like the tan is the favorite. When I scroll back up to look at the chairs, I just about bypass the tan. I think hunting room when I see it.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I would definitely go with the tan. The print is bold and the tan softens it so that it's not the first thing that your eye goes to. Have fun and looking forward to seeing your selection.

  125. Wow! So many comments about the chair decision! I believe in speaking directly, so here I go.... I wouldn't choose to put in another chair. Your room is full enough as is. You would be crowding up the room and have to shift to get past furniture. It looks like you already have plenty of comfortable furniture where you can put your feet up if need be. If you really insist on another chair, I would go for a more neutral fabric, and then you can put a bold graphic pillow on, or change to another pillow when the whim hits you. I hope whatever decision you make, you enjoy your choice. You have a great blog, and I enjoy getting your posts. Thank you Yvonne :) Warm thoughts, Pamela from Prince Edward Island, Canada

    1. I had the same thought about the amount of heavy upholstered pieces. An occasional chair in a pattern would fit the space better.

    2. I also was thinking that you may consider how the pattern is going to match up when the recliner is closed and opened.

  126. Can you cut and paste into the photo? Love the black and white…but investment pieces for me have typically been classic and subltle. Are those lamp stripes blue or black? Someone mentioned you might have to change drapes with the black; I think it may be the case with the tan if they don't do together. (Colors had to tell exactly.) Did you purt the chair samples with your fbric sample from you had back when you first started the redoes? May want to check that out. In the end…go with what you love!!!
In the end…get what you love!!

  127. The recliner is really lovely and looks very comfy. I love houndstooth but not this houndstooth. The scale seems off for your room. I think that the pattern will overpower the room in either color way. I think that you will tire with this large scale pattern. I agree with others who have suggested buying a yard of fabric to live with for a few days first.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I love the chair in both colors but I would honestly take the tan because it is less harsh of a contrast, can be easily toned down with the right throw or cushion and the tan color will go better with your leather pieces then a stark black IMO, plus if you are REALLY set on getting the black and white print I am sure you can order some pillows in the black print and place them on the other side of the room, since the pattern would be the same they would still match and you could always use them to pull things together in other rooms or cover them when they bore you. That said you are pretty handy, or so it seem (lol) so if you are comfortable with the idea of reupholstering the chair down the road then go for the black. I am no help... buy both and put the other one in a different room....

    ReplyDelete
  129. I vote for tan, love the chair. I too have had a recliner prejudice for years, in fact my first married quarrel was over whether or not we would have a recliner in the living room but these new ones from Lazyboy are quite stylish. It will be so nice on your knees to sit in that chair at the end of a long day. Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  130. I think that either will look great so my comment is about the chair itself. I am not a recliner lover either but I have two of these chairs by Lazy Boy (different legs and fabric) that I purchased at a furniture store that sold various brands. I wanted two matching club chairs and decided that other people might like the recliner. I have really enjoyed them so much both as a club and recliner which really surprised me. Your home is amazing! Thanks for sharing.

  131. I absolutely love this chair ...... in fact, I'm in the market for a new chair for the same reasons you are: need the comfortable chair for back, as well as comfy chair for reading. The La-Z-Boy store is definitely on my list. Were me, however, I would have the chair covered in something like a nice medium-navy suede or other fabric that wears well. I'm most definitely a color person, and that is how I would perk up your brown/white room. If you do pick the hound's tooth fabric and later get tired of it, you can always have it recovered. A nice chair like that one should last a very long time.

    ReplyDelete
  132. OK, you wanted us to be honest. When I saw the first one I kinda cringed. This is the very FIRST thing that you have chosen that I didn't really like. I love the tan one. I know I would get tired of the black and white one. I hope you don't get tired of the large houdstooth pattern. I might. But you have LOTS of opinions here so go with YOUR GUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  133. Is it possible to get LARGE swatches of each fabric to bring home and try in the room...even if you need to buy a yard of each? I noted that you are using a black chair in the spot right now, and since every room needs a pop of black, maybe that's why your are leaning toward the black? My main concern would be to decide if the proportion of the houndstooth in either color is right for your room. Another option might be to investigate fabrics from another source. I'm sure that you could order the chair C.O.M. That said, you already seem to have a number of taupe/tan pieces in the room. I might lean toward a contrasting color, but I'm not totally comfortable with the black hounds tooth. I do understand that I'm not seeing the entire room, and you have such a good eye for design and balance. So, I don't have a vote....just some questions that I would ask if it were my room....and a beautiful room it is. Enough rambling....thanks for inviting us for a peek. Cherry Kay

  134. Ok- this may not be one of your choices, but if you are anything like me and keep things forever ( we have a Lazyboy that is 18 years old) i think you'll tire of the hound tooth check pattern no matter what color you get! If you get either, you are then locked in to keeping everything else to make sure it goes with the houndstooth check- I would sooner get a (boring, I know) linen type weave and go crazy with b&w houndstooth check pillows (add more around the room to tie it all together). When you get tired of the pillows it will be easier to change and justify getting a new look. I have a tiny check type patterned fabric on a sofa I thought I would be okay with for "a very long time" but after 8 years I am tired of it. I wished I had gone more neutral and had the option to ADD color and design with less expensive options like pillows and drapes- but I'm locked in to redecorate around the hints of the green/brown/tans/rust in that sofa. Just my humble opinion- for all it's worth...

  135. Yvonne, I like the tan houndstooth the best and it goes well with the brown leather pieces you already have. We had a lazy boy in our last home and no one knew it was a recliner.

  136. I love both but REALLY like the tan one better. I think it is classy and will go nicely with just about any other color you would want to add to your room. The black will as well but the tan actually took my breath away when I saw it! I'm sure either one will look good so can hardly wait until you let us know of your decision!

  137. I definitely like the tan chair better. You could always bring a "sassy" throw into the room. Investment pieces are best in a neutral tone. Although you could always have the black chair reupholstered if you get tired of it!

    ReplyDelete
  138. I vote for number Two. If you do get tired of it, it is easily moveable to other areas of your home. :)

  139. I choose the Tan. I love to add some black to my rooms in small ways. Black is such a bold color, a little goes a long way. I think the black chair would be too bold and stand out too much. The tan would blend better and give you a warm and inviting look.

  145. Eek! I nearly screamed when I read the first few paragraphs about your wanting a recliner. And then I saw you found one that looks like a club chair!! I did, too, when hubby and I were looking at new chairs last week. He would like a recliner and I don't. But when his is not reclining, they look identical. I am getting mine in a sort of tan duck cloth. My room is neutral and I have some pale grayish blue going on so I like that I can jazz up the chairs with pillows and throws. I would suggest you go neutral as well as the darker colors and patterns wear on you after awhile. It's easy to change out curtains or an area rug, but furniture is definitely there to stay. You might be able to find some textured fabric. Good luck!

  146. Yvonne, I think your taste is wonderful and like so many others who have commented, you are my go-to lady! If you are anything like me though, I love to go bold, pick daring patterns and colors. But when it comes to expensive pieces that need to last me a while, I've learned my lesson, go solid, go texture and enjoy with some daring throws and pillows. If you are absolutely sold on the pattern, which is beautiful, go tan. It will go nicely with the window treatments you so lovingly painted, and the leather. Otherwise, you may find yourself at your favorite outlet looking for more pillows and throws to change everything on your sofa so that it blends better with the new chair! Can't wait to see what you do and how it looks!!!

    1. PS Can you get some giant swatches of the patterns and hang them at the height where the chair will go? Then you can walk by, sit at the table, sit on the couch and stare for a while in different light, and see how each will look. (Like paint swatches right?)

  147. Well, my goodness. You got so many opinions here. I love bold and at first would have voted for the black and white. Love that combo and with the kitchen adjacent with all your black touches that would have been my first choice. However, After looking again at your family room; enlaring the picture on my screen I have to rescind that choice. Here is why. As most have said, you have such such nice, warm neutrals in the room already. i think the tan would be a lovely addition and my biggest reason for the neutral is the lovely blue accents you use in the room. I did notice though that you have other black accents in your room that play with the black in the kitchen, but i don’t think I would like the blue pillows, blue ceramic, etc. as well with the black and white chair. I think they would fight one another. I agree with one of the other ladies, that you should bring home both (or other) swatches. Lay them on the chair you have there now and just take it all in. Besides, you will want to see just how the tan plays with the other neutrals in the room. They can be tricky. You are the best! Go with your gut!

  148. I love houndstooth! At first, I was loving the black and white - but, I think for long term the more subtle tan is better for an investment piece. Tough choice - beautiful chair either way!

  150. Hello, Yvonne. Perhaps you should wait and think about this a little longer.....see the room after the hardwood floor is put in before bringing in another piece of furniture. I'm not crazy about the idea of having the popular tan chair being squeezed in between your beautiful drapes. It seems too heavy for that space; I like the chair you have under the name board, as it is....with its black lines coordinating with the other bits of black in the room.
I prefer the black and white houndstooth, but I'm not sure that is the space for it. There seems to be enough furniture in the room for now. I agree with a change in flooring, but if the room were mine, I would wait on the chair.
No matter what you decide, I know you will make it work beautifully.

  151. Are you sorry you asked for opinions? LOL Just for kicks I'll add mine both personal & professional ;)

If you're really, really in love with houndstooth (meaning you've loved it for yrs) then go with the color that you're emotionally tied to as well. Odds are you'll love it for long time. Professionally speaking, however, I don't see this pattern mixing well with the other patterns you're currently using. It's going to compete with them. When mixing patterns, it's even more important to have your patterns well-balanced & in sync. A sure fire way to know if you haven't achieved this, is if you eye goes to one area and stays. Not to be confused with a focal point which draws the eye in. Harmony makes you want to keep viewing effortlessly around the room for the full tour. If you closed your eyes, what would you think would be the first piece your eyes would gravitate to? I think it would be this chair because the print is so bold & the scale is more suited for contemporary or transitional environment. You have an earthy neutral palette that needs a smaller scale pattern. Perhaps something in the beige & blue palletes.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I would go with the black. You already have so many neutrals in that room. You have some black on the other side in the fireplace area etc... I think it would pull that all together and also look wonderful with your kitchen on the other side. Can't wait to see what you decide. Good Luck!!!

    ReplyDelete
  153. My design belief is that investment pieces you plan to keep long term should be neutral and "safe." Being someone who loves tone on tone I may not be the best to give an opinion, however, I once was a color and bold pattern person and every time I chose something that was as bold as the black and white chair I grew tired of it in a very short time. BUT this is your home so let your heart speak to what you really and truly want, then you will love it :)

    ReplyDelete
  154. I've found most of my true disappointments are when I've listened to others opinions over my heart. (Sorry, probably making things harder.) Can you print out the pictures of the chairs and tape them onto your computer screen and get a 'real time' view of the feel your looking for? I think you will say "Oh, yeah, that's it!" to one. And you'll be relieved because really, you knew it all along.

  157. I too love Herringbone! I think the black and white is too modern looking to go in your traditional and cozy room. To me it just doesn't work. I read your list of pros and cons and if the reason to go with black is because it's different and fun, you may regret it later. When I look at your home it says traditional not modern. I totally see that tan one being you based on the things you write. I see you struggling to break out of your comfort zone. I will tell you I did that once when a designer talked me into a bold Ikat for a custom chair and when I got it home...BIG mistake. It looked awful. Luckily the fabric snagged horribly and they let me recover it. I chose a herringbone plaid and was so happy. So listen to your gut instinct..it will not steer you wrong.

  159. I'm going to rain on your parade and say neither. The key is you said it was "in style right now". I think you should go with a more neutral chair and buy or make a throw in the jazzy fabric.

  160. This is a really tough decision. I absolutely love the black because of the "pop". Part of me thinks that the tan will bland and blend too much - with the tan carpet, curtains, and beehive looking accessory and all. BUT, you seem to have a lot of blue in that room and the black might be a little too much black (I like the chair you have there now because of that little pop of black. There again... you could add a blue (to go with other things in the room) or black pillow to the tan chair to give it a little pop and deter from the too much tan I mentioned above.
Ending note... its a tough decision. I love the herringbone pattern and both are gorgeous... I also think a dark gray (picking up the gray from the picture above it) or blue (from the other accessories in the room) herringbone would be pretty too. I say go with you heart... don't let logic or anything else stand in the way... if you truly love one color over the other... just make the decision, go with it, and never look back. OR... you could get both since you said you love them both - I'm sure you could find somewhere to put the second chair, right???

  161. Hi Yvonne...I am a retired interior designer....(that does not make my opinion more valid than the others, but here goes) I think the pattern is bold enough .... love it. But it "says enough". The tan will calm it down so that while it will still look like a "visitor" in the room...(different than every thing else) ...it will be a "welcomed" visitor. Love it! (In tan)

  162. I think the tan chair relates better to what is already in the room... JMHO.. one more thing, is this a recliner that doesn't "flip" all the way back or reclines within the confines of the "chair" space.. You might want the latter. Not sure what the technical term is for that type. I have one of each and really wish they both confined to their space!

  163. As much as I love the black and white I think I would tire of it too quickly. If you could get it in a smaller print I'd go with the black and white...otherwise the tan and white :)

  164. I think the tan is a beautiful chair and would be a timeless "investment" piece. Your home is lovely to look at and to admire your wonderful taste.

  165. Wow...as if you even need one more opinion...but here's mine (designer). The room does have a pattern: your lovely window treatments, so this chair is directly in front of them! The black hounds tooth is too bold (it would become an eyesore) for the other lovely decor in the room which is in the neutrals with blue accessories, so the tan family is a better color choice, lest the chair dominate and ruin the balance of the ensemble you already have. But the scale of the hounds tooth is off...it's too big and you will tire of it easily and it will be hard to accessorize with a pillow. Suggest a more subtle check or stripe in a smaller scale, that maybe picks up a suggestion of the blue if you want, but stays in the beige/camel family: something that appears as a small pattern when close, but 'reads' more as a solid when 15-20 ft away, such as a file or tweed. Then accessorize it with a touch of blue which can be patterned if you desire. It is well worth it to spend the money to order LARGE samples of several fabrics you like, and live with them in situe before you decide. If nothing seems right with the choices at Lazyboy, then go to Calico Corners and pick/order some samples there, and have the chair made up in your choice of fabric: COM (customer's own material). It might cost a bit more, but so worth it in the end since you will own this chair forever. If they won't do it, then go to a better store where you have this option. You will own this chair a long time so spending a few hundred more up front will insure you will still love it 20 years from now. Consider waiting until you have the hardwood down because the carpet is running interference with your eye for now, and you might prefer a small black or blue & tan stripe once you see the floor exposed. Hope this helps...good luck.

  166. To be honest, I don't care for the scale of the print, but if you stick with that, go tan. You can always edit your accent colors and add a complementing throw on the chair. If you were to scale down the houndstooth, I can see black working.

  168. Love the chair! Can you post how it will look reclined? I am so curious. I like the black and white but believe the tan and white will endure. It is equally beautiful. You can always add black and white pillows to bring that color scheme into the room. Much safer choice.

  169. Yvonne, I remember you having a sofa slipcovered because you didn't care for the printed fabric on your sofa. I'm thinking you were attracted to the hounds tooth design perhaps for the same reason you were to your sofa fabric and IF you elect to go with either hounds tooth fabric you will regret it later. I adore your window treatments, but personally I would not like the hounds tooth so close to your curtains. Now I realize you are going for some jazz in this cozy room and were attracted to the boldness of the hounds tooth. I can see that you are striving to have your style evolve into something more than your past predictable efforts, but what was wrong with that? I know you will ponder all these responses. Then you will evaluate what you hope to achieve in this room. The room is lovely and cozy looking. It will still be cozy with the hardwood floors but once the floor is down the chosen print in either color would dominate the room. In my opinion the chair would upset the balance. You have time and if you haven't already started a collection of pictures showing chairs of colors and fabrics you see as possibilities I think this is a great time to do that. In the end it will all work out because you will know in your heart what is right for the room and yourself.

  170. If you want a geometric pattern in the room why not add it in a rug to warm up your new wood floors? There are so many great inexpensive choices out there now. Go for a solid for the chair and find a fun rug!

I'm still working on the amazing 'surprise" trip Bobby gave you! What a treasure he is! I personally would get tired of that bold pattern very quickly, but if I had to choose, it would be the tan.

  172. love the chair-love the large houndstooth-love the warm taupe.

  173. I think the second choice is your best bet. The only real "con" I spotted was that you might regret not getting the black and white chair. The other two cons are actually "PROS" in disquise. The fact that you said you could use this in any room is an excellent plus. You cant go wrong there. The fact that you said it was a safe choice is also a "PRO" in my opinon. SAFE is never a bad thing when you are investing good money into something. It is a nice way of saying NO REGRETS, in my opinion. Thanks for asking us to share our thoughts ; ).

  174. They are both beautiful chairs and recliners have come a VERY long way. It is amazing the way they have change into beautiful chairs. The black one is very striking and makes a statement. This being an investment piece I would worry of tiring of the boldness over time. The other is more soothing to eye and I think it makes a statement in itself. That is my two sense so I would pick the tan and I think it would fit beautifully for years to come.

  175. Love the black and white for the here and now. But the tan is going to be the best bet for longevity, which in my opinion, is what you go for in a piece like this. :) Good-luck! Can't go wrong either way!

  176. Oh, Yvonne, the more I look at the print, the more I think the scale is too big and may easily get boring. However, if it is exciting for a limited length of time, you can always have it re-covered later.

  177. Ok, you have probably decided already on which chair you'll be getting, I love the tan.... The black and white also is very nice, but I don't feel I'd like it in your Family room ..maybe you can use it elsewhere???

  178. You don't need my two cents worth!!! I know you'll make the right choice. I do love houndstooth also!! It's timeless in my book!~~Angela

  179. For an investment piece- can you go with solid and just get houndstooth (teeth?) pillows and change them up when the spirit moves you? Nothing like leather or a nice linen - a good solid piece that can change as the seasons and mood strikes you. Anything bold and you will be slapping your forehead down the road.

You didn't say option 3, but I am all about solids and working the prints in with pillows.

And I have heard nothing but raves about the new designs at La-Z-Boy! Brooks Shields endorses it and she is awesome. : - )

I think I kinda love your husband even more now, he sure knows his wife, doesn't he? HUGS.

  180. I agree the room could use a larger print, but both of these houndstooth samples are HUGE. Yeesh. I would vote for a large, but visually lighter graphic pattern-- maybe an Ikat or windowpane. Something along those lines. And, psst: 'drug' isn't a word!

  181. The houndstooth hurts my eyes! I would go cross-eyed if I had to look at it very long! LOL! The tan one is softer and goes with the drapes and the leather chair better. I would have to go with a stripe instead. BTW, I have one of those Lazy-Boy small recliners very similar. We purchased it fourteen years ago and it is still in great shape. The fabric I chose is a floral on tan by Thomas Kinkade and has nail heads around it. Our sofa is dark green. We haven't tired of the floral yet. Good luck with your choice. Can't wait to see what it will be!

  182. Yvonne, I love the chair and recently bought the same style narrow recliner in a stone (taupe) leather from the Martha Stewart collection at Macy's. This houndstooth print is adorable; however, I believe a slightly smaller print would go better in your room. Since these are your current two choices, I agree with other comments that the tan houndstooth is softer and believe it goes easier in the room although the idea that you could see the black and white from other rooms is appealing as well. If you are keeping the blue accents in the room, a solid soft deep blue throw would tone down the bold black and white contrast. I love your sense of style and ability to incorporate patterns and colors that I have a hard time meshing in my own home. You give me inspiration and I am gradually expanding my own decorating thanks to your talent. I hope you are feeling better and that whichever pattern you choose will complete the look you are hoping to achieve. Happy spring!

  183. I'd go with the beige. It would look beautiful with the rest of the warm colors in the room. I have the same colors in my family room. Instead of the houndstooth print I have beige ticking in Sunbrella material and I love it. Good luck with your choice, I am sure you will make the right decision since you have great style and such a beautiful home.

  184. You're set on the large houndstooth? I think the pattern itself is scary if you don't want it to go out of style by next year. But, if you're set on it, the beige would seem to be the safest route.

  185. The tan chair will look great, love it! Seems like the black demands to much attention and will take away from the rest of your beautiful room!

    ReplyDelete
  186. The tan is much better. Not so "in your face". I think I'd get tired of the boldness of the black and white and want to reupholster it.

  187. If you really plan to keep it for years, so with a subtle menswear tweed in either warm grey or tan and add your bold houndstooth in pillows. When I think of your whole beautiful house the big bold check just does not fit. I think you will regret such a purchase.

  188. I love the second choice. Still such a fun pattern, but you won't tire of it as easily.
