THE FIND~ BUFFET HUNTING

I've been hunting! Scouting out antique markets, second hand shops and yard sales trying to bag a new/old dining room buffet or sideboard.

Like any trophy, it needed to be better than average... with distinct markings and lots of detail!

With the help of my friend Fiffer (a thousand thanks!)... I brought my trophy buffet home yesterday!

Here she is, sitting in my soon-to-be-redecorated foyer!

She's a real beauty! Lots of pretty detail... I love how her legs flange out a little. Bobby, who lets me have decorating carte blanche, could not believe that I actually was going to paint her. I do feel just a little guilty about that... her wood is really gorgeous!

The only thing she is missing is a drawer pull. I'll be on line searching for one to replace it!

Here she is "gutted" and upside-down on top of my work table in the living room. So happy my furniture has not come in yet. The living room is a perfect place for these kinds of projects.

I use this little cart as a work station...

I scrubbed her down and put 2 coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in COUNTRY GREY on her yesterday. Country Grey is not really grey at all, but a dull muted creamy beige.

In the photo below you can see the new wall paint color... it's the one on the right side of the wall. It is Benjamin Moore Sonnet.

The drawers and cabinet fronts also got a good coat of ASCP.

I'll share the buffet reveal and the painting process next week... I hope! I pinched a nerve in my back from lifting her and spent a very sleepless night last night!

I'm feeling better but Dr. Bobby said...
NO PAINTING TODAY!

And I said OKAY, NO PAINTING TODAY... (I'm going to be sanding!) My poor husband, I am his worst patient!

  4. Yvonne, what did you wash it down with? I know some people use that sodium phosphate stuff so I just wondered. When you use ASCP, you don't have to sand beforehand do you?

    1. Karen, I washed it down with Dawn dishwashing liquid and water. I find that works for me. I have not yet bought a piece that needs something stronger. NO SANDING before painting with ASCP. Glad you asked!

  5. I love it and I am sure it will be fabulous. Great lines. It is very similar to the one I have in my foyer that I painted, too as hubby gasped. He gasped yesterday when I started painting the dining room chairs, too, but he gives me carte blanche pretty much here, too.

  6. Beautiful piece ! I can't wait to see it all done... It's going to be gorgeous. I love finding an antique buffet, but they are harder to come across now (at least for a reasonable price).
Take care of yourself and feel better!

  13. Great find! Good things come to those who are patient. I'm still waiting patiently for an extra buffet or sideboard that I can use for extra storage out on the sun porch.
I just know she is going to be beautiful in her new coat of paint. '-)

  19. Love the sideboard you are painting. I'm almost ready to paint with ASCP an old rather large French buffet. Ive never used this paint before and feel a little nervous putting the first coat on it, almost like having had long hair for ever and the hairdresser is standing with the scissors to cut it all off !! I hope this paint is as easy to use as everyone says it is !!

  21. She is gorgeous!! I've recently used country grey on two pieces and really loved the colour. I was moving my daughters huge, heavy dresser yesterday and felt a pop in my back. I can barely move since, so I can sympathize with your pain! I, too am still going to try to get some projects done- I have no time to be laid up !! :)

  25. Your buffet is already looking gorgeous! Looking forward to the reveal. If, while searching online for a drawer pull replacement, you find a good source, please do share. I have an old Ethan Allen hutch that's missing one of its brass knobs. Good luck! =)

  29. Yvonne,
    Oh, my goodness...she is a B E A U T Y, indeed!!!
It appears she may be a workhorse, as well with all the drawers and shelves!
At first sight, I thought yeah...NO painting! Closer observations shows minimal flaws!
However, the paint choice only updates and re~freshes her to something more regal!
NOW...dear friend...listen to Dr. Bobby. Rest that back!!! I'm with him!!!
    Been there...well, you know!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  30. These are my favorite kind of buffets. I have one and yes....I knew I was going to paint it but felt guilty...that guilt was quickly over as soon as I saw how pretty she was painted. And your's is the same. Much prettier painted.

  33. I am so excited to see her finished!! I don't have the talent to take on such a project- maybe someday I will try, until then I finally went out and had an Amish craftsman build me one. Good luck with your progress on your beautiful buffet. Hope your back feels better.

  35. Beautiful!! I saw a couple old buffets and now they're gone. The prices were good compared to something that you'd buy new but lacking character of the vintage and old. I love it painted and can't wait to see the finished project. Of course, later when your back is better.

  36. Oh she is going to be a looker once you are done and she is quite beautiful now also. Take care of your back. I am looking forward to seeing her finished.....lin

  41. Really lovely color choice! You have certainly been keeping busy...no wonder you pinched your back a little. I hope you take it easy today. Blessings to you!

  42. She's a beauty with all that lovely detail (which I think will look stunning painted). Good to know that the grey is really more of a creamy beige. I was thinking of using it on a piece but I wanted a sort of French Gray.

  43. Cant wait to see it all done. Hope your are feeling better!:)

  48. I'm always torn between painting or leaving the wood tone on an almost flawless piece. I think and ponder and think and ponder some more. In the end I'm most always happy with my decision. She's beautiful in her new color, can't wait to see the total transformation and her new diggs! Thank you for the Dawn dish soap tip! :)
