Paperwhites remind me of Christmas. They are elegant and snowy white and organic and have a heady sweet smell.
They mix wonderfully with evergreen branches and twinkling lights. They look stately grouped with Poinsettias and can be a resplendent flurry-of-white when grouped together.
Paperwhites make lovely and thoughtful living gifts that will give the recipient a season of pleasure and blooms! It's especially fun to give a single bulb in a ball jar! Given at Christmas, these flowers will bloom in January and February... just when we all need a little something blooming in our lives!
I planted my paperwhites on my back porch potting bench.
Materials:
paperwhite bulbs
gravel, small stones, or glass pebbles
wide mouth half pint ball jars
screw on lids for ball jars
Fill ball jar 3/4 full of small stones.
Paperwhites do not need soil. They just need the stones to support their roots and to help hold them upright.
Place the paperwhite bulb on top of the stones with the tip up.
Screw on the jar lid
Add a bow or twine...
Add a tag with instructions...
Paperwhites will bloom in about 6 weeks... just in time to enjoy for the Christmas season!

ReplyDeleteThat's an awesome idea! I need to get some bulbs. I grew some a couple of years ago and enjoyed them. I like the stone idea because I could see the roots too much in my jar and I didn't care for it. Love the accent with the ribbon and pine branch! Great idea!

Do you need to clean the stones before using, or are they purchased stones that are already cleaned?

Very nice-A great gift that folks will enjoy watching grow! Don't forget to stick the bulb(s) in the ground once spent (I've planted them in the spring but they should really be stored until fall), I've had success with them growing the next spring.

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely way to give paperwhites as gifts. I included at the party today how I plant paperwhites for use indoors in our home over the holidays. I use a larger container and more bulbs, but you are right--they are very easy to grow, and bloom just at a time of year when I start to miss my flowers out in the garden!
