SWEATER PUMPKINS

Autumn is the time for falling leaves and cozy sweaters... made into pumpkins!

I may not have the fairy godmother touch, turning pumpkins into whimsical carriages... but I can turn a sweater into a pumpkin with a wave of my magic scissors and a few other crafty thing...

Here is how you can work magic on an old sweater too...

I was surprised how EASY and fun this project was...

I have seen these charming wooly pumpkins on many blog and pinterest... and was captivated by them!

Here is my spin on ...

SWEATER PUMPKINS
*old sweaters
sissors
string or rubber bands
wired paper twine
pencil
felt
hot glue

*I found neutral colored sweaters at Goodwill ... took them home and washed and air dried them.

Cut the sleeves off of the sweaters. I tried to judge how long I wanted my pumpkin to be, added 3 inches and cut the sleeves accordingly.

Turn the sleeve inside out and tie the cut edge together.

Turn the sleeve right side out and stuff with fiberfill , leaving about 2 inches at the top. Tie off top with string.

Wind the wired paper twine tightly around the base of the pumpkin, continuing upward to make the stem.

When you feel you have the right size stem, clip the wired paper twine.

Cut off any excess cuff that is above the twine. I really like the look of a fuzzy, chenille-type top!

Cut a 10 inch length of wired paper twine and wrap the center of the twine around the base of the pumpkin one time.

Wrap the twine around the pencil to make curly tendrils.

Cut out a free form leaf from felt ( I washed and dried my felt first to give it texture) and hot glue to the pumpkin.

Make several and display!

My niece Kelley calls me her "Fairy Godmother"  so...

BIBBIDI BIBBIDI BOO...

I'm tucking a trio of pumpkins into her college care package!

  5. So adorable, and when there aren't many pumpkins to be had these are a perfect substitute. I have a beautiful, genuine Aran sweater my lovely Daddy brought back from Ireland when I was a wee child. I still have the sweater, way too small now, so this will be perfect to make something for my favourite season of all! Thank you! Deborah C♥

  16. So in love with your white, cuddly pumpkins...this is such a clever idea! Now since I love my white hand knitted sweater too much to cut up, I will have to make a trip to the Salvation Army to hunt for sweaters. Thanks for this crafty idea! Linda mysewwhatblog.blogspot.com

  17. My first thought when I saw this post was "I love them and I'll read the instructions, but I'd never be able to make them" as we both know that I'm craft impaired. However...you made it seem possible. Your instructions are clear and I think just maybe...I might pull this off! My daughter is coming home on Sunday for 9 days. I think we will try this project. Where can I find the wired twine?

  54. I am having trouble finding the paper twist wire. Went to Michaels and Hobby Lobby but the stuff I bought is too hard to wrap around the stem. . . .help! Can you tell me where you got yours or what gauge it is?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I found it at Michael's and it is pretty stiff...and is in a coil. I helps to spin the pumpkin and not the wire I think....wrapping it around as you go.

  55. Hi Ann, I don't think my wired paper twist was anything special. You just may need a little help from a stronger hand.

  56. Dear Yvonne - You are not only brilliant but you are an answer to prayer! I have these sleeves off a blouse (mine are velvet) and I was just wondering today how I could make them into a pumpkin. I didn't even think of tying one end off and turning it inside out before gathering up the other end. I am pinning your tutorial and can't way to get some time to try this! Thank you so much.
    Blessings,
