It's more of an obsession, really! I have embraced the the ironstone trend and come full circle.
My first set of dishware as a college student was ironstone. I loved ironstone then as much as I do now.
For me, collecting is not a frenzied, rushed hunt. It has been slow and enjoyable and deliberate. Choosing some pieces and passing up others. Delighting in each piece as if finding a small treasure.
My favorite haunts to find ironstone are antique shops, second hand shops and discount stores.
I like original old ironstone, but I am not limited to the vintage type. It's a mix and match collection... that really defines how I go about most decorating! Old and new, pricey and inexpensive, nothing matchy matchy.... lots of interest.
Pitchers tend to catch my eye! I love their shape!
Amber handled flatware finds a home in another ironstone pitcher.
Large bowls are trickier to find. I love the classic lines of this big bowl!
My most recent find, this squat small gravy boat came home with me for $2.00. I think it is adorable. We use it as a spoon rest near our coffee station.
It rests on a set of fluted ironstone plates, a Luckett's find! I am captivated by any dish with an interesting edge!
The ironstone fits nicely into another recent buy... a large round basket from St. Michael's on the Chesapeake Bay.
I will get lots of use from this sturdy basket! And speaking of baskets... that is my other love!
I have some errands to run this afternoon... I just might have to stop by one of my favorite antique shops and look for another piece of ironstone for my collection!

Your collection is lovely. I love finding pretty and unique things for my home, too. It's fun popping something unexpected into the mix.

ReplyDeleteYour ironstone collection is just fantastic! I love to collect tureens both white and transferware ones. My hallway is lined with pictures of cows and I love anything to do with birds, nests, dogs or horses.
ReplyDeleteI love the pitcher, bowl, and well all of it. I collect hotel and old cafeteria ironstone. Really what catches my eye and if the price is right. I just found a good many pieces of Johnson Brothers Old English Castles in brown transferware with a large pitcher. I am running out of room but am having a garage sale and will be making space next weekend:]
ReplyDeleteLove the ironstone!!! Started my collection, and like you I am not in a hurry. Snagged a gravy boat, and platter at an estate sale to start with. The hunt is fun to me and not intending to ruch to complete a set. I mix the ironstone with other things anyway. Blue Willow and milkglass are favorites of mine too.

ReplyDeleteOver 20 years ago my mother traded me here Federalist Ironstone service for 12 for my Pfaltzgraff Village. At the time I was going from my rustic country to victorian phase (I've gone through a few more since then!). At the time I thought it was pretty boring but now I realize what a great trade that was for me. I now love it even though pieces are getting crackled and discolored. You were smart to get collecting a classic from the start. Love seeing your ironstone now and don't find it boring at all!

Love your ironstone and love that basket. I do love collection both, too. Other collections now are majolica, blue and white pottery, roe deer antlers, vintage wood boxes, and the list goes on.

ReplyDeleteWe collect an old ironstone pattern called Tea Leaf. There were quite a few makers, but Alfred Meakin is our favorite. My husband is a distant relative of his and also shares the Meakin name.

Dearest Yvonne: I, too, am obsessed with white ironstone, and have only now started collecting it. I must also tell you that I am flagrantly copying your ironstone post of a few days ago. Today, I received a small-ish Red Cliff pitcher that I won on e-bay and I just love it. It is residing in an old wooden cheese box; hopefully there will be more pieces soon. There is not a single CREATIVE cell in my pea brain, but I can surely copy! Thank you so much for the inspiration!!!

You have some lovely ironstone pieces, Yvonne. I just started a collection of ironstone although I have been using white dishes for some time now. Pitchers are one of my favourites too. I also collect aqua canning jars among other things.

The way you've stacked the dishes, cups and saucers truly capitivated my heart!!! I love my restaurant collection! Those small pitchers are sometimes used to warm syrup for waffles! This post looks so inviting for these lazy days of Summer and out~of~doors dining experiences!

ReplyDeleteis a cupboard full. I have been collecting a few pieces. It is hard to come by here in Ontario CDA. But I do believe I have the same basket.
I love how pretty that picture looks with all of your ironstone displayed in that basket tray! I have a few pieces myself, but not a large collection. I have that same little creamer that you show in your picture too! It's such a nice heavy piece for being so small.

Just beginning my collection of white dinnerware & would love to find some such unique pieces. For many years, I have collected china cups & saucers; adding one at a time as we found them - each have its own 'story.' Recent follower of your great blog, which inspires me in so many ways. My introduction to blogs began September 2013 when my sister called me & said, "You've got to check out this site!" That site was BNOTP; and soon after I also became a daily follower of Stone Gable.
