Autumn's Softer Side

Autumn has a softer side. Creamy whites, warm browns, and the fading glory of summer hues.

Several of my dear readers have expressed that autumnal orange is not their favorite color.  I thought I would offer a softer color palate for fall decorating.

Using an old worn wooden bowl gives my arrangement rustic texture and warm color.

Hydrangeas are finally ready and at their peak to be dried! Click HERE to see a tutorial on drying hydrangeas. These beauties are located at the side of my house where they are protected and have turned a gorgeous color this year.

Filling a bowl full of fall-stained hydrangeas and acorns is a pretty alternative to pumpkins.

Look for these blooms as a part of my Christmas decor.!

I often get asked about my photographs~ I use a digital image program called Microsoft Digital Image 10. It is an old program. I'm sure there is an updated version. I can edit, watermark, enhance, store and do some pretty fun effects.

I used the "chalk" effect with these images.

  4. Your Hydrangeas have turned a lovely shade this year. We had such dry conditions this summer, even with watering that mine aren't as pretty :( Thank you for letting me enjoy yours!

  5. Thank you for sharing the softer colors of Autumn. I'm decorating with a softer palette this season - tired of the bright orange from so many years past. Think I'm ready for soft, gentle days at home. Your hydrangeas are beautiful. I need to go out and check mine.

  7. It is fun to see hydrangeas showcased as a Fall centerpiece. So often we think of them as Summer.

Mine are still gorgeous outside, and fun, because they range from the shades you have here to the very stunning blue of young blooms.

Checking my calendar...I'll email you soon.

  9. Yvonne, thanks for showing this softer side of fall! I love hydrangeas but have only had lace-cap ones so far. We planted some more this year though so hopefully I can do some drying next year. I will be coming back for that tutorial then! :-)

  12. What a nice alternative, Yvonne. I have to agree with some of your other readers that sometimes an all orange scheme can be a bit much. Love your hydrangeas. Mine are drying on their bushes this year. My daughter did want to grab some, though, to do an arrangement, so I'll have to cut some this weekend I think.

  13. Very pretty Yvonne! My front porch is decorated for fall in softer colors too. I wanted to leave my pink geraniums so I added some pinkish mums and hydrangeas.

  24. Hydrangeas and acorns ~ love both of these! I try to have fresh hydrangeas out in our home when ever they are availble, but I always have a huge group of dried ones as well. Wonderful shots! ~ Sarah

  27. I love your softer side of autumn. While I don't mind a tablescape in ANY color, when I'm decorating my home, I prefer the soft as well.

Thanks for being a part of Seasonal Sundays.

  31. Yvonne, you have no idea how timely this post was for me! My home is mainly decorated in pink and I've always struggled with Autumn decorating and pink. This has given me some great ideas. Thank you so much!

  33. I am not big on Fall decorating either. I do the cutesy stuff for the grandkids as they just think it is magical to come to Grandma's "spooky house", but then I almost skip over any Fall decor and go straight into Christmas. This is gorgeous and would fit so well with my regular color palate. I like to have fun with the photo programs and my favorite is also an old one that they don't carry and the systems won't even support. Unfortunately I have a 200 page cookbook that is on this program and I can't transfer it!! Hate how they always have to change things.
