I could really use your help and opinion...
Big change is in the air at StoneGable. I am changing my beloved yellows and tuscan colors for neutrals.
I just ordered a new sofa in this...
New pillows and cube ottomens (to tuck under the sofa table) in this...
More pillows in this (I love this applique fabric)...
And 2 club chairs and an ottoman in this...
We are painting the walls this weekend. Well, actually my boys are painting... I am going away on a retreat. My ceiling will be refreshed with a soft white and the woodwork and crown molding is the same color as my kitchen cabinerts (picture below) a soft white.
I have been collecting paint swatches, painting my walls in various neutrals and pouring over magazines and blogs to look for the perfect color.
Not only will the family room be painted but the kitchen and eating area too. They all flow into one another.
My kitchen cabinets are white. So is the countertop, but we are also doing a little kitchen refresh and I am replacing the countertops with black soapstone.
I want to keep my walls neutral, but not too beige. And not to muddy dirt brown. Somewhere in between.
Here is what I have come up with.

What do you think? Do you have any other suggestions? I would be so happy to hear from you!
Yvonne, you have some lovely neutrals there- I've used all of them at one time or another for various clients. The problem I have with advising from here is that they ALL will have a tendency to look a bit "different" depending on your light, time of day, windows, (are you painting ceilings too? Lighter, darker, same??), and most importantly- how YOU feel when you see them. I will suggest that before painting, paint 4 LARGE (poster size) sample boards and tape one up on each wall. They will all look different in different lights and shadow. I just know the end result will be beautiful!

Hi Yvonne! I would go with Lenox Tan. My husband is a builder/remodelor and we use this color all the time. The majority of my house is painted this color as well as Tyler Taupe. But overall, I have found Lenox Tan to work well with a variety of colors. I would also recommend painting a big piece of foam board so you can move it around and check it with your lighting and fabrics, etc. just to make sure of your color selection. Good Luck!

Again, the bamboo drew my eyes when placed against the cabinets.

I'm such a color person, I'd have a tough time going with all neutrals, so I'm not a good judge of neutrals.

Yvonne, I love all those fabrics. I like the bamboo or the taupe. If you are covering a large space and especially if there is a lot of light, the color of any of those samples is going to be lighter than what you are looking at on those little painted spots. The lighter the color sample the even lighter it will be overall. If you want it real light then go with a lighter one. You didn't mention the trim color either. White?
ReplyDeleteThese samples are beautifully presented but impossible to choose from in this setting....that being said, I keep coming back to the Wicker. So...there is another opinion among the many. It is lighter while seeming to compliment the colors in the fabrics.

Hi Yvonne, how exciting to have all of the painting accomplished while you're away on a retreat! We're in the middle of painting and redecorating our dining/living room in the farmhouse - I'm saying that we're just letting the room 'grow up a bit

ReplyDeleteI would suggest painting small sections of the wall and seeing it in different light throughout the day and evening, (and on a sunny day and cloudy day) it makes a huge difference. I painted four paint colors on the wall in my dining room and still picked the wrong color. It looks shadowy in the daytime if it's not very sunny. Good luck with everything! ReplyDeleteI like the look of the Lenox Tan, but I don't see it next to the cabinet. Is it one of those chips next to the cabinet? I am with the others.....which one do you like in the different light settings? I'd say paint posters and live with them for a few days.

When I choose paint, I look at the color formula and make sure there will be no "surprises" in the undertones.
By that I mean a unexpected color coming through.
Sometimes, that's my purpose---to find a color with just a little rose coloring as an undertone. If so, there should be a few drops of red.
A friend of mine whose an artist, always advises me to look at my paint samples next to pure white to see the true color.
Good luck with your choices! Sometimes the decision comes quickly and other times- it takes lots of thought. Your fabrics are wonderful! I'm sure it will all be beautiful ~

Yvonne, First let me say that I have been enjoying your blog for the past several weeks. I am new to following blogs and am blown away by the creativity and friendships that are found here. I wish I had a tiny touch of your talents--I came to your blog and many others via Susan's BNOTP-- As for selecting your colors, I use a simple clue--I look for the undertones in the colors I am working with and the undertones of the paint--ie. --looks like your colors (IAW my monitor) have a more gray undertone--some of your chips seem to have yellowish or pinkish tones in the beige/taupe. I try to keep things within the same base family--it always serves me well. I would love to win a subscription to the e-zine--I guess that is why I love these blogs--I am a magazine junkie and blogs are just one, continuous, wonderful magazine and there are always new trails to follow! I am anxious to see the transformation! A Virginia Girl transplanted to PA--not far from you (Adams Co.)

I have used Taupe 3 and 4 in several homes and I love it. It seems to be the perfect neutral, right on trend, BUT, be aware it gets a pinky to greyish tone in northern and winter light. My newest go to neutral is Bellgrove Buff from Lowes...the white on that chip is the trim and cabinet color from all over my house, so it obviously goes great. :) It reads a pale creamy yellow similar to Ralph Lauren's Canvas Natural.

I know that whatever you choose will be beautiful - it already looks stunning and that is without the fabric applied to the furniture. My vote is for the WICKER - bright-airy-creamy and calming!

All I can say is you did a stunning display of your color options! I have trouble deciding on those shades and am in the midst of a similar decision. What's really nice is that you aren't doing the painting. When you return from the weekend it will all be finished for you! ReplyDeleteHi Yvonne, I am also in the process of neutralizing after yellows and reds...although living room is going pale blue. The one neutral I have been very happy with and could use everywhere is Benjamin Moore's Pensive from their Aura/Affinity line. i must also add that these taupe/neutrals seem to change with the light, wall, furniture reflections, etc. much more than a deeper color, so beware! ReplyDeleteLove all your selections and can't wait to see the finished product! I'm voting for Bamboo. I don't like a lot of yellow undertones nor red undertones. Prefer smooth creamy looking neutral. My mom has Lenox Tan and it looks great. But since you're using white trim the darker richer shade (bamboo) seems to bring more contrast. Also, I have black granite countertops, twice now, and hate them b/c they show everything. But hopefully soapstone would be different. Seems to not have that sheen like granite. Black is so nice with the neutrals. Gonna look great! Happy Decorating!

Yvonne- your fabric selections will be the HIT of the show... B4 I changed wall colors, I painted large pieces of foam board and moved them around the house to see the colors in different light at different times of the day (especially under artificial light.You may also consider painting the ceiling a lighter shade of the wall... ties the ceiling and walls together and makes your trim pop. ReplyDeleteYour fabrics are amazing and all the paint colors are beautiful too. Light plays such a big part in what you are doing...just remember, the color intensifies on the wall. I choose my shade and go 2 shades lighter and am always pleased. I can hardly wait to see the AFTER!
I was drawn to the Bamboo in your swatches. Just to throw another color into the mix. We painted a good portion of our downstairs with Sherwin-Williams' Row House town, and we love it.

I'm probably influenced by the fact that we've painted our downstairs bathroom and one of our kid's rooms in shades of light brown. I'm so happy for you that you get to have your painting done by the boys while you're on a retreat!!

I would tend toward the bamboo too, I find with our lighting which is similar to your area too if you get into those middle neutrals they come up with rose/pink undertones at certain times of the day.
ReplyDeleteI have one of my guest rooms painted in a darker neutral with white trim, I love that room and the color seems to stay consistent with the light of day.
I know whatever you choose will be perfect and if it isn't well then the guys will have another weekend project on their hands. After all its just paint.

ReplyDeleteWhen selecting paint I learned the hard way that it is best to find out the undertones. After my numerous paint failures I have starting asking for paint details and I started painting big pieces of boards. After a few days of looking at them during the different times of the day I am better able to make a selection. Since we are nearing the end of the week, and paint must be bought so the boys don't get away, I will say based on my monitor the Bamboo looks good, but dark. If you don't have a lot of windows I would go with the Lenox tan. I love your fabrics, and I know you are going to do a wonderful and tasteful job with your new look. I do hope you post pictures when everything thing is complete.

ReplyDeleteI adore "Bamboo" I have an image of Dick Van Dyke dancing and singing "The old bamboo, the old bamboo" from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. :)It is so hard to get a true reading from photographs but it appears to really work well with your selected fabric choice. (Which I LOVE by the way.) It also gives enough of a contrast to your painted cabinets. It you feel it might be a wee to dark you could go up one shade on the palette.

Yvonne-You have a neutral and still interesting palette going on there. I love the different textures and patterns. I agree. It's hard enough to pick out a color in person much less without seeing the actual space to be painted. I have supreme confidence in your decisions and know it will be lovely. I'm one of those people that has to paint it on the walls in several places to see what it looks like in different light. Good luck! I've always found picking paint color to be hard! Your fabrics are lovely, you lucky girl. And soapstone, sounds wonderful. I'm looking forward to seeing it. As for the colours, I agree with comments already made. Your choices all look good, some will stand out to you more than others in real life (not on our screens.) My suggestion would be to be careful of the undertone of the tan/neutral. If you don't have or want pink, be careful of pinky undertones. Some have more of a yellow undertone. The best way to tell is to narrow your choices down to a few and paint a bigger section to see in different light at different times of the day.
ReplyDeleteHi Yvonne, What fun for you! I would love to be in your shoes. Beautiful selections of fabric as much as I like monotone and neutrals I adore color! Will you be adding a color for pop? You might want to consider this as the undertones of each of your colors is different, pink, gray, yellow etc. Personally, and I've got to add this cause I adore orange and its shades of melon, tangerine. . .I would pop with some of this, just me. You could also use turquose or golds. Reason being that if you choose to accent with a bold color you may want to choose your shade with this undertone to get a beautiful balance. I'm sure the end result will be amazing. Have fun!
