SHIP AHOY TABLESCAPE

ARRRRRR MATEY!

Today's table sends us sailing to sandy shell covered beaches, and clear blue waters! So, hoist up those white sails and lets move on the salty sea breeze!  A nautical themed tablescape is the Capt'n Special for today!

August is "beach" month to me. When the heat and humidity get to much to bear, heading to breezy beaches seems like the thing to do! Today's table was inspired by sailing away ... if only in our imaginations!

One of the strongest elements of this table is the minimal color palate. Keeping it cool, clean and crisp, this table evokes a calm feel.  Just what we need to beat the heat!

Two white cotton table runner's (Pottery Barn) that represent crisp white sails are laid out intersecting each other. The table is not completely covered because it's rough texture is reminiscent of wood aged by the sea.

Twiggy place mats, like sand dune fences, become a textural base for each place setting.

A stack of blue and white greet each guest. Dramatic navy blue and white square plates (HomeGoods) are stacked on top of my beloved leaf and berry chargers (HomeGoods). Navy and white creates such a dramatic, yet cool look. The flourishes on the plates remind me of Naval knots!

A large white shell dish tops off the stack. It is filled with crushed shells and a pretty things collected from our imaginary beach.

Simple white flatware rests on the worn wood of the table. The contrast between the smooth white and the warm hewn wood is visually appealing.

White sailors-knotted napkin rings (Christmas Tree Shop) tie up a duo of napkins (Williams-Sonoma and home made). Stars and stripes, in the colors of the sea and beach,  add a big splash of color to this table.

The striped fabric could have come from an beach chair or umbrella.

Little delicate white fan shells filled with sea salt rest on each twiggy place mat.

White bubble goblets (Reading China & Glass) are as smooth as sea glass and mirror the bubbles of the crashing waves!

Our sailboat is beached in a worn dough bowl centerpiece.

The centerpiece is filled with shells, sand dollars, starfish, willow balls and driftwood.

Tall glass candlesticks are rimmed with little pieces "del mare".

Big shell salt and pepper's add to the beachy theme.

Blue and white rowboat side dishes (Christmas Tree Hill) moor among the tableware.

Monkey knuckle knots and other organic beach elements are strewn across the table to carry on the theme.

We have sailed far away from the heat and the hustlle of day to our own private beachy tablescape.

Won't you sit a little while and relax with an island inspired meal?

  22. Yvonne, just last night we returned from a week on the coast of Maine, so this table is making me long for the cool breezes and salt air. We walked out of the airport at 9pm and it was 100. Why did we leave Maine? What were we thinking?
So thank you for this table filled with ocean breezes!

  61. Your table is so beautiful. I decorated our cottage in a nautical theme. I think it is a theme that is very relaxing. Blue and white is so beautiful as well. Your sailboat ties the whole table together!

  62. Every moment of this tablescape is incredible. I spent a summer on Nantucket when I was in college. The centerpiece reminds me of walks down the beach...you'd come upon a small boat that had been pulled up onto the sand and left with rigging and things washed in by the tide...so many wonderful memories. I adore the navy plates. They are so full of possibilities...I could see a tablescape that gives a nod to Coco Chanel using those...it would include pearls and gold chain, don't you think? Thanks for sharing your wonderful design. Cherry Kay
