An Island or Worktable in your kitchen should do more than be a food prep table, quick meal dining surface or catch all for clutter. Your kitchen island can be a surface to decorate and add beauty to your kitchen as well as serving as a wonderful buffet surface for entertaining.
I recently visited one of my favorite local home decor and gift shops. The Olde Millhouse Shoppe, just opened the historic old home next to the mill as a decor showcase. I was thrilled to see this country kitchen so beautifully staged with colorful dishes and clever design details.
This kitchen is full of dishes and goodies to buy, but I also thought that it could give us many wonderful idea about decorating an island.
One thing I noticed right away was that almost every inch of this L-shaped island was filled. Also the use of a limited color scheme and repeated elements keeps our eyes going from one detail to another. There is so much interest here! The dishes used on the island are very reasonably priced, too!
Using red, green and yellow as the primary colors in the islandscape, keeps this detailed packed island from looking too busy. Don't you just love the pineapple flatware?
Think outside the box by using something in an unexpected way for a big statement. A tiered plate stand is used to stack complimentary tea pots. This not only is very appealing but gives height to the island arrangement.
Bringing different heights to an island by using little tables, plate stands and shelves can be so much more visually pleasing than everything on the same level. Staggering heights one of my favorite decorating tips.
Using an object de arte, or a fun unexpected piece, like this fabulous coffee mill, can be the Wow factor of your islandscape. For years I had a huge round white birdhouse on a tall architectural pillar on the island in my kitchen. It got so may compliments!
Using greens as "filler" and "fluff" will take your island from plain to full and lush. This is another tip I find so useful.
Don't forget a pretty runner, placemats, unexpected elements and small details. Plate holders, large bowls, flatware tied together with a coordinating ribbon are just some fun ideas you can use too!
This beautifully decorated island is full of basic lessons we can study and learn to use in our own homes.
A very special thank you to The Olde Millhouse Shoppe. There are so many beautifully put together tablescapes, rooms and unique home decor. You can visit them and shop on-line by clicking HERE.
I am joining Susan at Between Naps On The Porch for Tablescape Thursday. There is so much talent and creativity going on over there. Check out all the inspirational Tablescapes!

So come on, fess up, how many place settings did you walk out with? I could totally see you doing that. It is so you. Love the stacked tea pots. I think that would be fun to do for a buffet style dinner with different teas in each. Love the coffee mill! It's all so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI am still trying to find those dishes that you got at Home Goods. The white ones with the leaf pattern around the edge. I am so in love with them!

PS. How much did you buy?
Another very pretty tablescape! :) I love how all the pieces are different colors but the same pattern. Bringing the greenery in really filled in and made the whole display look finished.

ReplyDeleteI love all of the colors! Very warm and inviting!
ReplyDeleteThis IS really eye-catching! Thanks for sharing it. I especially love the teapots set on plates on the plate stand.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing visual tour of your island!!! I'm so glad I picked your tablescape to view first. I'm gonna grab your button and visit often
ReplyDeleteThanks.
I do love this! I especially love the warm colors and all the "accoutrements" are things I like too! I go in phases with the island because it has two levels. But We are thinking we will recongfigure it to a large rectangle, then it might be easier to accessorize. this is wonderful inspiration!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty! I especially LOVE the pineapple flatware! If you can get us some information on the flatware it sure would be appreciated. Thanks for always having such a beautiful post!
ReplyDeleteYvonne Dear, Just looked at your Island theme from the Old Millhouse Shops. I love the colors. I really liked the raised oblong dish that had the creamer/sugar/salt & peppers. Would be wonderful on your island. What do you think? You should work for them!!!!, or someone of that creativity. What an asset you would be. Love, Mother
ReplyDeleteRed, yellow and green are my favorite decorating colors, so I'm loving these 'scapes. I would get into so much trouble in that store. LOL! Thanks for sharing your visit.
ReplyDeleteHi Yvonne! Wow, you did a fantastic job ~ fabulous photography and tutorial.
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with that beautiful pineapple flatware, and the teapot tower. Everything is beautiful. Thank you so much for zooming in on the details for us, (and for the link, too!)
xo~m.
The colors are great - some of my favorite! The Coffee Mill - fabulous! I adore the tea pot on the plate stand. Oh how I wish I had an island!
ReplyDeleteHi Yvonne, we so appreciate your visit and the very thoughtful comment. How right you are about your post today having so many ideas. I think the colors are great but more importantly there are teachables. All of us can learn more. Great choice -- I always enjoy coming over here. -- Jane F.
ReplyDeleteHi Yvonne,
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty display. Oh man, I don't know if I could resist the pineapple flatware. I may check out the store.
Thanks for stopping by to see my porch and yellow front door. If we lived near eachother, I would give you the rest of my quart of paint as a trial. I barely used any. The way you describe your house, it sounds like a yellow door would be wonderful. Did you see Micah's post of yellow doors. She just drove around her town and found a bunch of them on all types of houses. Go check them out for inspiration.

I'd love to know if you do it!

Yvonne, this is beautifully staged and your photos of all the details are amazing. Thank you for taking the time to photograph this display and share it with us. I'd love to visit this shop.
ReplyDeleteHello Yvonne~I truly appreciate your visit and sweet comment. I too look forward to getting to know each other. We truly are kindred spirits.
ReplyDeleteI love the selection of colors in this display. It reminds me of my Tracy Porter dinnerware.
Living in a older home I'm not fortunate to have an Island, but have taken the liberty of turning a counter into a decorative space, that have similar rich tones you've pictured.
There is so much inspiration to draw from here.
Thank you for taking me on your tour of the Olde Millhouse Shoppe.
Sweet wishes,
Sara
I have been to an Olde Mill Shoppe in Strassburg/Lancaster PA. Is this the one in the same?
ReplyDeleteThank you!

Yvonne, I went to the site, got the address and did Expedia but have one question. Is it right on Ro, which is Lancaster Pike??? I come up route 896 from my house and end up at Rockvale outlets. Can you direct me from there at all????? You can e-mail me at: szpinky@aol.com if you would. Thanks so much! I really want to go there!!!!! XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteThose are the colors (red, green, and muted yellow) of my kitchen and I just love them. Such happy colors :) I've been wanting to get some stoneware like that too, but I think since I already have all three of those colors throughout my kitchen that I'll need to choose one color to go with. I'm thinking the goldish yellow will be the one when I finally get around to it,...and get the money of course!
ReplyDeleteLove it!
Yvonne, what stunning visuals for a little shop...very unusual to find this kind of talent outside a really big posh store, you know? Brilliant. Thanks for posting it. xx's Marsha
ReplyDeleteI love you blog site. I just wish I could have been there too.
